Scope
[edit]A few thoughts on expanding this page.
The term "Life Support System" does not necessarily refer to human life support alone, although this field of science was primarily started by space exploration endeavours. I think a bit of expansion on the history of life support systems in terms of space flight is needed, for example a reference to the Biosphere II project or those in the early years of the Russian space program during the cold war era.
To expand on this, "life support systems", abreviated LSS, ideally refers to any system that can sustain a given group of organisms (not necessarily humans) for a determined period of time or indefinately. LS systems are particularly prevelant in the public aquarium community, where the sustainability of wild caught marine species is primarily based on adequate life support systems designed according to their individual environmental requirements.
"Bioregenerative life support systems" is another particularly interesting area of LSS technology that can be explored further.

- I agree the term ought to cover more than just support of humans in space. In fact, the article as it currently stands should probably be renamed at some point to Life support system (spaceflight). (sdsds - talk) 04:17, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
That sounds like a good idea. Or maybe just Life support (spaceflight)? Vsst 16:41, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
- Perhaps this could be broken down into a subsection on space flight? I could see some obvious other examples of life-support systems which would have some things in common with space systems. The best example might be a submarine. It would also need to have oxygen regulation systems, CO2 scrubbers which may be similar in principal to manned space flight systems. Perhaps the article could have a subsection for space-based concerns and systems, as well as one for submersibles, biosphere-like projects, aircraft, other closed environments and so on. That's just my thought, as it seems there is much which applies to only space flight, but a few more general life-support systems DrBuzz0 04:20, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Advanced Life Support (ALS)
[edit]Aldough I am not really aware of the difference, ALS or advanced life support is another thing coined by Space Agency officials. Please include it (and its distinctions) to the article
sci-fi and gravity
[edit]In Sci-Fi, life support systems also include so form of artificial gravity. While this doesn't exist today, it does in sci-fi, and is worth a mention.

ECLSS futures
[edit]I think the article might benefit from some following of where these system might go in the future, or to avoid speculation, how researchers and government/business folk are working on novel concepts to get there.
ECLSS futures with biologically-based systems
[edit]To this end, an interesting concept was presented at the Space Manufacturing 14 conference at NASA Ames Research Center in October 2010: The Engineering Trade Space for a Robust Closed Ecological Life Support System: A Suggested Technology Road Map. Take a look if interested. It might provide a start for a useful expansion of the article. N2e (talk) 19:03, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
move article
[edit]looks easier to rename this article to NASA life support system the way it is at the moment. Penyulap talk 07:34, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
