First non-white player in Division One
[edit]I'm afraid the sources cited are wrong. Delapenha's First Division debut was by no means the first of a non-white player:
- Arthur Wharton played in goal in a First Division game for Sheffield United against Sunderland during 1894-95 [1]
- Walter Tull played in Tottenham Hotspur's very first top-flight campaign in 1909-10, making him the first black outfield player [2]
Eddie Parris, Jack Leslie and Frank Soo were other notable non-white players in England before Delapenha. Although he was definitely one of a select few, he was not the first. Qwghlm 13:11, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for bringing that up! As you pointed out I was using the sources that I referenced, and they were top results on Google. However, since you've provided evidence to the contrary (provided those sources themselves are accurate) it means the article definately needs rewording. Maybe the sources intended to refer to first player of Black Caribbean origin, as opposed to Black African, a distinction made at least by the UK Office of National Statistics [3], but this is certainly not clear. The first Jamaican might be accurate, but I've no other sources to back that up other than those two.--Simmo676 13:32, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
- Tull was of Barbadian origin so I don't think Delapenha can claim being the first Black Caribbean player either. The Football Unites, Racism Divides site is fairly reliable though, and I will take their claim he was the first Jamaican to be a reliable citation. I've corrected the article now - thanks for being so prompt in replying. Qwghlm 14:42, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
