Freeways/Highways

[edit]

In List of Houston highways, the original article name referred to freeways, not highways. With the exception of U.S. 90A (South Main), which is very close to being a freeway) these all appear to meet the definition of freeways. That is, they are all controlled access (the requirement to pay a toll does not mean a road is not a freeway, according to houstonfreeways.com). I liked the list better as a list of freeways, rather than highways, as it seems more tightly/rigorously defined and less likely to fill up over time with all kinds of highways such as:

  • Highway 6
  • Beaumont Highway (U.S. 90 between the East Belt and I-10)
  • TX 249 inside the beltway
  • Other parts of "highway" 90A inside the loop
  • Other state "highways" like TX 242, TX 146, TX 35 (Telephone Road portion), TX 3
  • Even far out examples of state "highways" in the 10-county area, like TX 105, TX 124, TX 36, TX 150, TX 156, TX 321 (I had to look up those last 3 for myself :) )

I think referring to them as "freeways" is the most appropriate and the best-defined alternative. If the name is changed back to freeways, I would add a note that U.S. 90A-South Main is not fully controlled access (although I think that it will eventually be controlled access between Hiram Clarke to the west of BW 8, if I'm not mistaken.) I'd like to hear your opinion. Ufwuct 02:43, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not to mention that all Farm/Urban Roads are technically state highways as well. --Holderca1 12:23, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Table?

[edit]

I thinking of putting the article into a table format which I hope will be more attractive and more readable. Ufwuct 05:56, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Other traffic counts

[edit]

Other traffic counts in case they're needed: U.S 90A: 35990, Allen Parkway: 28,950, Memorial: 45,180. Ufwuct 17:46, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I-10 West/Katy Freeway
[edit]

There is nothing in this article that talks about the Katy Freeway's Expansion project that when complete will give the Katy Freeway between 22 and 24 lanes including 4 toll lanes located in the center, 2 HOV lanes, 10 main lanes, and 6-8 access road lanes. Also last weekend, in the Spring Branch/ Memorial attachment in the Chronicle, the owners of the Taste of Texas restaurant in Memorial City proposed a plan to launch the "Stars and Stripes Freeway" initiative. The proposition as of 7/4/07 asks that all property owners between the 610 Loop and Katy construct a 100 foot flagpole along with a US Flag on their properties facing I-10. I think both of these are significant facts that need to be included in this article. Chief2654 23:07, 6 July 2007 (UTC)Chief2654[reply]
