Valeria Maksyuta

Sundayclose, can you please tell me why you removed Valeria Maksyuta? How could she possibly "fail by verification source"? The source I chose was related to her winning World Cup gold medals. During her career she won numerous international medals, was Israel's first female gymnastics Olympian in many years, and is most definitely Jewish. All you have to do is look at her profile for more sources. Wikimandia (talk) 20:07, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

Give us your source that she "is most definitely Jewish" per WP:BLPCAT. And I'm not explaining that policy to you a fourth time. If by "her profile" you mean her Wikipedia article, there is no source there that she identifies as Jewish. Sundayclose (talk) 02:10, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
She competed in two Maccabiah Games when she was representing Ukraine. You could also be nicer, I'm simply trying to contribute. Wikimandia (talk) 20:55, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Maccabiah Games . . . does that document her identification as a Jew in accordance with WP:RS??? Reminding someone repeatedly to follow policies when that person incessantly argues about it is not being "not nice". Who was it that called me stupid a few days ago . . . wait, let me check . . . oh that's right it was you; but I was nice enough not to get you blocked for it. I do appreciate anyone's good faith contributions, but you never hesitate to confirm that competence is required to edit. Sundayclose (talk) 21:58, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
According a presumption of good faith here, it's fair to point out that (1) to be eligible for the Maccabiah Games, an athlete has to be either Jewish or Israeli (see [1]), so if she was representing Ukraine, it's reasonable to conclude that she was self-identifying as Jewish; (2) the Jerusalem Post refers to her having "made aliya" when she moved to Israel,[2][3] which is also reasonably understood as an act of Jewish self-identification; and (3) International Gymnast magazine mentions her as one of "Several Jewish gymnasts [who] have emigrated to Israel". [4] So it's reasonable to conclude that sufficient sources exist to support her Jewishness, unless there are contrary sources or other reasons to find this a contentious issue. --Arxiloxos (talk) 23:51, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Arxiloxos is correct - non-Jewish non-Israelis cannot compete in the Maccabiah Games. And Sundayclose I never called YOU stupid. I said you stupidly reverted the entire batch of changes I made to cleaning up one article (including spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc, etc) because you had a problem with one thing I put in, instead of just saying it needs a citation or removing that sentence. And looking at the history of this page, from what I can see you've never made a single contribution except to remove Valeria Maksyuta. So it seems now you're just following me around Wikipedia patrolling everything I do? That's not weird. Wikimandia (talk) 00:56, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Arxiloxos. My point was never that she is not Jewish; the issue is sourcing, which has been a recurrent problem for Wikimandia. And I'm sure you realize that anything on Wikipedia that's challenged requires a source before it is restored regardless of how "obvious" it is. And Wikimandia, if you want to split hairs over whether your use of the word stupid was directed at me, I will be more than happy to ask an admin whether you deserve a block for your comment. Have you heard of shooting yourself in the foot? Keep up your comments and you will find out. And that's not to mention false accusations about "following you around" (as if it's impossible for two people who have a similar interest end up on the same article). I don't care to waste any more time with you, so we can settle this very quickly if you wish to continue commenting about ME instead of my edits. You have stretched the limits of WP:AGF, so I'm more than ready to bring in an admin if that's what you want. Frankly, I would prefer to dispose of this issue rather than continuing to waste my time with you. Sundayclose (talk) 02:24, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
LOL it's one hell of a coincidence. The Maksyuta inclusion WAS sourced - anyone can look at the history! I'm sorry you did not know that the Maccabiah Games, the "Jewish Olympics," are for Jewish athletes, especially considering she first took part in them when she was competing for Ukraine, as has been on her page for a long time. As for your statement that not sourcing things is a "recurrent problem" for me, then by all means, contact an administrator and ask them to review my history. I'm putting Maksyuta back. :-) Wikimandia (talk) 03:40, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

OK, as you requested, I'll contact an admin about your "stupid" comment. Enjoy your time off from editing. Sundayclose (talk) 04:41, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Discrimination ? Exclusion ? or what ?

Why is there on en.wikipedia a 'List of Jews in sports' (and a 'List of Muslims in sports'), and no 'List of Buddhists in sports', 'List of Catholics in sports', 'List of Orthodox in sports', 'List of Anglicans in sports', a.s.o, a.s.o ? --Alf.68 15:08, 8 July 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alf.68 (talkcontribs)

The usual reason is that no-one has been interested enough to write one. All volunteers here, remember. Britmax (talk) 15:15, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

There is a 'List of Muslims in sports' at the awful title List of Muslim sportspersons, which is really 'List of Muslims in sports in random Western countries'. But I think you've erred in assuming it's a list of religious Jews, rather than one of ethnic Jews. Either way, feel free to write 'List of Anglicans in sports' – it'd be a long list, and would be deleted right away. "Jews in sports" is a notable topic because being Jewish and playing sport is unusual, and real-world people have written articles and books about it, so Wikipedia can too. IgnorantArmies (talk) 17:29, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
Just for more info, List of Hindu sportspeople was deleted after discussion, and List of Marathi People in sports (along with several other recently-created Marathi lists) exists. Probably other sport/ethnicity/ religion lists exist, for better or worse. --Animalparty! (talk) 05:45, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

Who is a Jew?

There is an issue with this article, which is that it does not address the "Who is a Jew?" question. Athletes of fractional Jewish ancestry are included, as are athletes who have a Jewish father only, as are athletes with little or no Jewish background but who self-identity as Jewish. While not all Jewish denominations agree with Jewish law, which states that you are not a Jew if your mother is not a Jew (converts excluded), this article needs to apply a minimum standard for inclusion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.149.91.68 (talk) 16:37, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

Mario Balotelli

The Italian footballer Mario Balotelli has mentioend that his adoptive mother is Jewish, would that count as inclusion criteria? Does anyone have any other sources of him discussing a Jewish influence to his childhood?--MartinUK (talk) 15:57, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
