Central Park location

[edit]

It would be great if someone could provide all four boundary streets for this important early park; since there's a photo, it shouldn't be hard. Languagehat (talk) 15:36, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Clarifications

[edit]

Some confusion about what and where. Working on correcting...

Available San Francisco city directories on Ancestry.com: 1861--1865, 1867--1869, 1871--1883, 1887, 1891, 1896--1901, 1903--1905, 1907--1945, 1948, 1951, 1953--1955, 1957--1960, 1970

Ballparks from those directories:

Recreation Grounds (I) - southeast corner Folsom and 25th - first city dir mention 1871 - last 1883, when it was labeled Recreation PARK

Central Park - southeast corner Market and 8th - first city dir mention 1887 - last 1905 This would be the one overlooked by city hall - city hall was on southeast corner McAllister and Larkin

Haight Street Base Ball Grounds - east of South Stanyan between Waller and Frederick - only city dir mention is 1891 - newspapers indicate usage 1887 to early 1895

Recreation Park (II) - northwest corner 8th and Harrison [a few blocks southeast of Central Park] - first city directory mention 1898 - last 1905 - newspapers indicate its use right up to the earthquake - website link shows its other boundaries were Ringold and Gordon

Recreation Park (III) - west of South Valencia between 14th and 15th - first city directory mention 1907
