Split reverted: schools missing here

[edit]

I have reverted a move and split that were made on 2 April 2017 creating a separate article, List of Toronto District School Board elementary schools, because I could only find one actual solely elementary school listed there. This is the last version of that article before I moved this one back from List of Toronto District School Board secondary schools and redirected that one here. It contains some listings that are not in this article, although in some cases they may be old names, or this list is not intended to include closed schools? (The unlinked ones may possibly include another elementary school, but from their names they seem more likely to be secondary or all-grades alternative schools.) I was intending to add them here, but was stymied by the different cells in the table. So here is a list.

Yngvadottir None of those schools exist, they are either old names for schools on this list, or former high schools that merged with others. The list I made is complete as of 2017 for all secondary schools. As for elementary schools, there are hundreds. Mattximus (talk) 21:35, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I believe you! But I found only one in an article named "list of elementary schools". If only one has an article, I don't think a separate list is merited. I'm not sure it's merited if we have articles on half a dozen, which is unlikely, given that there has been a presumption of notability for secondary schools but not for elementary schools. We could list all the elementary schools, without linking, but I don't see the utility (the list is going to change over time and there is the official website for that). In any case, the list title turned out to be seriously misleading.
Since we have articles on some of the closed schools, might a separate section for former schools be appropriate? Yngvadottir (talk) 21:52, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think that would be a good idea, since most are not actually former schools, but old names for schools, or schools that were merged. Those articles should really be redirects to the main article. For example Vincent Massey Collegiate Institute shouldn't have it's own article, but should be a part of the Michael Power/St. Joseph High School article, since it's the same thing. Mattximus (talk) 10:59, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There may be such cases, but that particular example looks as though we cover a complicated history rather well, distinguishing the different schools that have used the same building. I think in general we should assist the reader by listing schools that have articles—I found some that were indeed redirects—and it might be clearer to separate out the defunct ones. I don't know what the general policy is on lists: what I think it is is that we have a list primarily if the topic has been written about as a whole, and what we include in the list should be predominantly items on which we have articles or that are reasonable red links. If I'm not too far off base, then it would follow, I think, that listing defunct schools is reasonable if we have articles on most of them, and that attempting to make a full list of elementary schools, especially in a separate article, isn't reasonable, unless Toronto elementary schools as a topic has a large amount of coverage (such as a big or much reported academic study of the provision for elementary education in the school district). So that's where I'm coming from. Am I off on my idea of how we do lists? I haven't worked with them very much at all. I do note that many articles on small school districts list all the schools, and that our list of schools in Scarborough includes some elementary schools. Yngvadottir (talk) 15:10, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm if you want to include schools that are not open, they usually have their own subheading such as "Former Schools" or even their own page. As for Elementary schools, they should have their own page, since there are hundreds of them in Toronto (far too many to include in one page with secondary schools, unlike smaller boards), however that simply takes too much time to create and maintain so I understand if no such page will exist for a long time. Ideally there shouldn't be a list of schools in Scarborough as that school board was eliminated in 2003. Mattximus (talk) 14:10, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Elementary Schools

[edit]

Something is wrong. There is no list of elementary schools. TheHYPO (talk) 21:13, 19 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, there was originally a second list with just Elementary Schools, but someone deleted it. There should be two lists List of secondary schools in the Toronto District School Board and List of elementary schools in the Toronto District School Board. It would be silly to have both lists on one page. Mattximus (talk) 01:17, 20 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
