I've just picked up from ProMED that there is a shortage of vaccine in the UK - see ProMED Archive Number 20090420.1492, Published Date 20-APR-2009, Subject PRO/AH> Louping ill - UK: vaccination.

I'm also intrigued by the name, and can think of two possible derivations:

  • loup means "wolf" in French (from lupus in Latin, IIRC), so it could be something to do with the way a sheep with the disease behaves - behaving like a wolf, or in the way it would behave if it were aware of the presence of a wolf, perhaps.
  • loupe means "magnifying glass in French, I think. Perhaps there is something about the histological appearance of the brain tissue, for example, that resembles a magnifying glass or a lens.

Of course, these are just speculation - does anybody know the true derivation of the term?

Ah - I may have answered my own question. The UK's Health Protection Agency web site has a page on the topic (if the link doesn't work, go to the HPA home page and follow "Infections A-Z", "Louping Ill", and "Background Information". It states that "The name 'louping-ill' is derived from an old Scottish word describing the effect of the disease in sheep whereby they 'loup' or spring into the air."]
