Mother Li's Chapel?
[edit]马礼逊 is a transliteration of Morrison; it doesn't mean "Mother Li". Bubbha (talk) 17:38, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not a native speaker of Chinese, so this came as a surprise to me, too. I thought that it was a possible mistranslation. Do we have any evidence to suggest that it was re-named after her, specifically?Brian0324 (talk) 21:15, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
- The name 马礼逊 (馬禮遜), "Ma Li Sun" in Mandarin, is Morrison; of this there is no doubt. It can be confirmed on the Robert Morrison (missionary) page as well as the Chinese page for the same. The "Ma" (马 or 馬) in his name means "horse", not "mother" (媽); the "Li" (礼 or 禮) is an entirely different one from the "Li" (李) in Li Tim-Oi (李添嬡). And in any case, in Chinese, the name "Mother Li" would be 李媽 (Li Ma), not 媽李 "Ma Li". I have great doubts that the chapel was named after Li Tim-Oi, even if someone were to claim it as some kind of obscure wordplay. Bubbha (talk) 18:50, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
- It seems like a stretch to say that the chapel was re-named - almost like a play on words. I removed the reference for now. If something can be sourced to claim otherwise, I'd like to see it in print.Brian0324 (talk) 15:27, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
- You are right, apologies. This was something someone told me and I agree it seems wrong. The rest of the paragraph, however, is sourced from the chapel leaflet and is correct. I think a reference to Li Tim-Oi in respect of the chapel remains relevant, no? Thanks. --Gangle (talk) 12:59, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
