Which Manning(s) owned the land?

[edit]

The article is not entirely consistent about who owned the land: Henry Lucius Manning, or the family. Currently the article includes:

  • "... named after the Manning family, significant landholders ..."
    - the family, multiple people
  • "Henry Lucius Manning purchased land ..."
    - one person
  • "... 1866, the Manning [sic] had a large ... estate"
    - should this be "Manning" (ie Henry) or "the Manning family"?
  • "In 1913, the family divided the estate ... The Mannings retained much of the property until 1948... "
    - implying that the family, not Henry, owned it

Possibly the first item should be "Henry Lucius Manning purchased land on behalf of the family...", or "... in the family's name..." Mitch Ames (talk) 09:57, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it changes over time. The timeline, according to the source, is:
  • Henry Lucius Manning purchased the land in 1840
  • Charles Alexander Manning arrived in December 1854 and immediately purchased additional land, along Canning River and elsewhere
  • Charles's son, Lucius Manning, "acquired" the property in 1886
  • Lucius Manning dies in 1888, and his wife Florence and eldest son Alfred Julian Manning then manage the property
  • In 1913 they divide it into large lots, which are owned by various family members until the government resumption in 1948
  • The first subdivision occurs in 1913, near Canning Bridge (Henley Street to a block south of Olive Street, and east to Ley Street)
So Henry was the first, but various Mannings have been the land owners. - Evad37 [talk] 10:34, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
