Attraction's opening date

[edit]

It's been widely reported that Manta began test operations the weekend of May 2-3, with a preview event on the evening of May 4 and the official "soft-open" planned for Tuesday, May 5. However, using the conventions of the Roller Coaster DataBase, which is sourced in all coaster-related articles, an attraction's status does not change from "under construction" to "open/operating" until the grand opening. This would include any soft-open days between this past weekend and the announced May 22 opening. Yes, you can ride it, but it's not open, if that makes any sense. To that end, I'm proposing revising the article to discuss the various events so far, then followed by its grand opening. Opinions? --McDoobAU93 (talk) 02:38, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

They are having a press event today, and it will be open for riding everyday until grand opening at noon.Kurt (talk) 14:09, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The attraction website refers to today's event as a "preview," so apparently the grand opening is still set for May 22. Using the WPRC convention of sourcing to RCDB, the attraction is definitely previewing, but it's not open. Admittedly, this issue will be resolved one way or the other in a couple of weeks, so it's not worth getting into an edit war over. --McDoobAU93 (talk) 16:12, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Citations needed

[edit]

There are three areas which I have not been able to find reliable sources for. Two of them relate to the construction milestones, with a third relating to a quote about the specific colour of the ride. If anyone can find citations for these, please add them in the article. Themeparkgc  Talk  01:37, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Themeparkgc! I did a lot of the early work on this article when the attraction was announced (I was living in Orlando at the time), and I thought I had provided a lot of sources for these statements. I did locate a statement covering when the land clearing had commenced in an existing source, so I copied that over. I'm working through to find the color scheme, as that too was announced. Admittedly, this was still early in my Wiki-career, and I've changed how I've done things since then. I'll track down the other statements you're looking for! :) --McDoobAU93 03:49, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, you really did do a good job for a new article. I looked back at the state it was a year before the attraction opened and I was amazed at what it covered. Thanks for the assistance in finding sources. Themeparkgc  Talk  03:53, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Got all your tags replaced with reliably-sourced data. --McDoobAU93 04:07, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Good job. Thanks again for your assistance. Themeparkgc  Talk  04:17, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Comments this is far too close to being an advert for the ride for me.

  • Page title needs to be in italics.
Fixed. Themeparkgc  Talk  23:12, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Image caption "Manta water effect" what does that mean, "effect'?
Fixed. Themeparkgc  Talk  23:45, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • "on a soaring, gliding journey" reads like an advert.
Fixed. Themeparkgc  Talk  23:45, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Lead is a little short. We have WP:LEAD to help give advice here.
I've extended it a bit. Is this sufficient? Themeparkgc  Talk  23:45, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Need to be careful, you've taken a lot of direct quotes, is it all really necessary?
I've reduced the quotes down to a single phrase. Themeparkgc  Talk  23:45, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • In the infobox you have "3,359" but "1500". Be consistent throughout with the commas.
Fixed. Themeparkgc  Talk  23:12, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • "is intended to be much more than a roller coaster" advert.
Fixed. Themeparkgc  Talk  23:45, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • "The experience begins" advert.
Fixed. Themeparkgc  Talk  23:45, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • "allow guests to observe the animals" advert.
Fixed. Themeparkgc  Talk  23:45, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Manta's rails, supports, and track are filled with sand to reduce noise and to fit the theme of a manta ray gliding silently through the water" advert (and inconsistent use of italics).
Fixed. Themeparkgc  Talk  23:45, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Image captions that aren't complete sentences should not have full stops.
Fixed. Themeparkgc  Talk  23:12, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Throughout, when referring to the ride, it should be Mantra not Mantra.
Fixed. Themeparkgc  Talk  23:12, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Mitch Hawker's Best Roller Coaster Poll (Steel)" is referenced to an award about "Steel Roller Coaster Poll" and I'm not even sure about the reliability of that website.
I've tweaked the title of the poll. As to the reliability, it has been cited by many reliable sources including the LA Times ([1]) and Washington Times-Herald ([2]). Park operators such as Six Flags have also cited the rankings ([3]). Even though I know "other stuff exists" shouldn't really be used as a reason, two featured articles (SheiKra and Millennium Force) as well as many of the GA-Class roller coaster articles also display the results of this poll. Themeparkgc  Talk  23:12, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Please use en-dashes, not hyphens, in website titles (per WP:DASH).

GAN criteria

[edit]

GA review – see WP:WIAGA for criteria

  1. Is it reasonably well written?
    A. Prose quality:
Could use a better lead and read less like an advert.
    B. MoS compliance for lead, layout, words to watch, fiction, and lists:
As noted above, several MOS issues.
  2. Is it factually accurate and verifiable?
    A. Has an appropriate reference section:
    B. Citation to reliable sources where necessary:
    C. No original research:
  3. Is it broad in its coverage?
    A. Major aspects:
    B. Focused:
  4. Is it neutral?
    Fair representation without bias:
As above, concerns over the fact that some of it reads like the brochure, or maybe an adaptation of the website.
  5. Is it stable?
    No edit wars, etc:
  6. Does it contain images to illustrate the topic?
    A. Images are tagged with their copyright status, and valid fair use rationales are provided for non-free content:
    B. Images are provided if possible and are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions:
  7. Overall:
    Pass or Fail:

On hold, pending those issues noted above. The most troubling are the neutral tone/borderline advert issues. The Rambling Man (talk) 16:26, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, thanks for the review. Secondly, I believe I have resolved your concerns. If there are any other advert concerns, please highlight them so that I can address them. Themeparkgc  Talk  23:45, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome, all good for me. The Rambling Man (talk) 16:22, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
