Romance scam
[edit]I removed a new section on a romance scam that used Welsh's name and image here. Aside from the obvious issues of the section being misplaced and using an external link rather than a ref, I'm concerned about the reliability of the source (scammersoff.com) and the amount of detail in this section. If there are reliable sources to show that Welsh's identity is a particularly common target of this scam then perhaps a small mention of the scam can be justified. if he is just one of many such targets then there is little point in even mentioning it in the article. - Hello Meters,
- I posted the note on Gen. Mark Welsh's biography about his name being used in romance scams. I understand your concerns about the quality of the reference being a link to a site -- what do you think would be an adequate alternative? I posted this note on his biography because a friend of mine was scammed by a person purporting to be Gen. Mark Welsh, who used photos from the Wikipedia page on him. She had also looked up his wikipedia page when she was checking him out. In that sense, wikipedia is being used to provide legitimacy to these folks, which kind of burns me up. A quick search of Gen. Mark Welsh and "scam" on google turns up multiple discussions of this identity being used this way. (Sadly my friend did not think to search THAT combo of words.)
- I appreciate your work on keeping Wikipedia clear and accurate. Is there some kind of synthesis here? it seems to me that if one or more people are using this name/identity to run scams vulnerable people, it would be helpful if the wikipedia page on that person mentioned this. Please let me know your thoughts. (talk) 20:32, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
- I think my original post already answered this. This scam is nothing new; the only thing of interest is that the scammers are using the info of the Chief of Staff of the US Air Force. If anything at all, this warrants just a short mention (just one or two sentences) to say that his identity has being used in such scams without any details. It would need a much better source (and as a ref, not an external link), but since we're talking about the Chief of Staff of the US Air Force I'm sure that can be found. By the way, edits such as this should never be marked as minor. Meters (talk) 06:35, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

Another possible Romance Scam, using General Welsh's image
[edit]There is an account on Facebook for a Steven Mark, using a photo of the General. He purports to be on a peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan. So far I have not been asked to do/give/send anything, but this person is clearly using the General's photo. Check out Steven Mark on Facebook. Birth year
[edit]The 1979 Air Force Register shows his birth year as 1954, not 1953. I see no direct citations for his birth date, so I'll WP:BOLD and cite the USAF document. Rob Rosenberger (talk) 21:30, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
