meiotic drive drove barn mice to extinction in small demes in the 1950's

[edit]

Richard Lewontin noticed meiotic drive knocking off small pops of barn mice in France in the 1950's. The responsible gene (tailless) - could be spliced out of the mice and inserted in any mammalian species you want to get rid of it in areas where it is not native. For example rabbits could be eliminated in Australia, and possums from New Zealand.
