Should this really be in as a 'verified discovery'. As far as I can see, it's still a claim that needs to be verified and, as the article itself says, it is likely to be disputed.

The phrases Researchers in Brazil are claiming to have established as a scientific fact that the Amazon is the longest river in the world and There has been a healthy academic debate over the world's longest river for some years and the claim from Brazil may not go unchallenged come to the forefront.
