I've located an ISBN number for a 2004 reprint of the "History of the Monros of Fowlis" and included that in the reference. Dcodriscoll 15:17, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers for the guidance. I'd missed that resource, but it's very useful. Thanks. Dcodriscoll 12:05, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

One more

[edit]

Dr James Monro, Born: November 17, 1939; Died: August 29, 2013, was one of the most-respected heart surgeons of his generation and a pioneer of congenital heart surgery, particularly recognised for his corrective cardiac surgery on babies. Until his death, he was President of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Britain and Ireland. Although born in Singapore and educated in England, he was extremely proud of his Scottish ancestors in the medical field. As a young man he was a rifle shot for Scotland at international level and throughout his life enjoyed playing links golf on this country's courses.

He came from a long line of Scottish doctors from the Monro of Fyrish. Shipsview (talk) 19:10, 8 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Fyrish

[edit]

I do not have access to the sources to do it myself, but I feel that this article would benefit from some history about how the estate came into Monro hands, and when and how it left them.

The eastern lands of Fyrish were added to the Novar estate when they were passed from the Munro of Culrain family to the Munro of Novar family during the 18th century. Is this at the same time that the Douglas family acquired them? A Captain William Douglas of the Marines, who was part of an expedition against Martinique and Guadaloupe in 1758-59 died at Fyrish on 24 August 1788. He, and his descendant Robert, a plantation owner in the West Indies, are both described as being 'of Fyrish', though I suspect Robert may have been so named after his Fyrish Plantation, in Demerara. This would seem to indicate that there was no Monro, 10th of Fyrish. Other family members are described as being 'of Kiltearn', a neighbouring landholding.

I note that a George Kenneth Monro of Fyrish matriculated Arms "of that description" in 1994. I do not know if this indicates that the family is back in residence. Shipsview (talk) 19:32, 8 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
