Question on quotation

[edit]
  • Shelley wrote that the poem "was composed under the immediate impression of the deep and powerful feelings excited by the objects which it attempts to describe; and, as an undisciplined overflowing of the soul, rests its claim to approbation on an attempt to imitate the untamable wilderness and inaccessible solemnity from which those feeling sprang". - This is from the "Preface" written by PBS in Six Weeks' Tour (page vi). Should we include that fact? Awadewit (talk) 19:38, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely. I was going to ask Jayvdb about tracking down an edition for Wikisource. I had access to the 1930 edition, but you can relist the page number to the original. I'll see if Jayvdb can upload both. If you have any more information (which I am sure you do) about the Tour, feel free to insert. Ottava Rima (talk) 19:43, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Images

[edit]

Question - I feel that three images could be used: PBS, Mont Blanc, and a picture of an original first page/title page showing the work included/content page doing this. However, which order? I would think that Percy could go at the top, Mont Blanc in the background, and the poem page in the poem section. Since this was not printed on its own, the poem page should not go at the top, unless its a really nice copy, and then possibly? I would like some feed back and/or other views. Even though this thread is very old, i'm adding this question here because it is so closely related.
I feel that using the file file "File:Mont blanc 2007.jpg" is dubious because Mont Blanc is not actually visible in that picture. For details, see File talk:Mont blanc 2007.jpg.
Unfortunately, i was unable to find an image of Mont Blanc taken from Chamonix on Wikimedia Commons.
Consequently, i propose using [1], which shows Mont Blanc from roughly the right direction, i.e. from the North, from the other side of the valley, with the line of sight passing approximately over Chamonix.
Do you agree? Schwarze (talk) 03:34, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Some options for the text:

Neither of these are very exciting, so I agree that putting either at the top of the article is probably not the best choice. Awadewit (talk) 19:59, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Haha, so I'm not alone with that. :) Now, we just need to figure out which is sexier - PBS's image or the mountain. It is a rather appealing mountain. :) Ottava Rima (talk) 20:05, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to pick the most sublime view. :) Awadewit (talk) 20:07, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I added one of the text images. Arrange as you prefer. Awadewit (talk) 20:50, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Question of fact (ascent of Mt Blanc)

[edit]

I have deleted the sentence claiming that Shelley accompanied de Saussure on his ascent of Mont Blanc as the latter died in 1799 when Shelley was 7 years old.

Mary Shelley describes (19th century tourist) visits to the Bossons Glacier and Mer de Glace at Montanvers, but makes no mention of Shelley climbing Mont Blanc, in 'History of a six weeks tour'.

MS's collection of PBS's poetry

[edit]

Unfortunately MS does not have much to say about MB in her edition of PBS's works (see here). Should we mention that the poem was included in this first edition of PBS's poetry, though? Awadewit (talk) 20:24, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would think so. Perhaps also a small hint towards what Percy's father may have done to slow down her edition also (a few words, half a line maybe). Mary was important in continuing on his legacy, and I would welcome this fact to be spread around as much as possible. Ottava Rima (talk) 21:18, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I added a bit - feel free to remove something if you think it is too much. Awadewit (talk) 21:41, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unless it passes 100k, its not too much. :) Ottava Rima (talk) 21:59, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lead image

[edit]

Small point, but I'd swap the lead image with the Amelia Curran portrait. Ceoil sláinte 22:11, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
