Route Through Adelaide
[edit]Hi All. Wondering if someone can clear something up about the route the National Highway takes through Adelaide. According to many wiki pages, it enters Adelaide as Port Wakefield Road (A1) to Grand Junction Road (A16) then Hampstead Road (A16) and so on. However on actually road signage the national route comes off of Port Wakefield Road at the Salisbury Highway Overpass, and follows Salisbury Highway to the start of the Port River Expressway, then down South Road to Grand Junction and then to Hampstead Road. Is this actually the case? LukeNE (talk) 00:00, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Pacific Highway
[edit]The map accompanying this article does not include the Pacific Highway between (vicinity of) Newcastle and Brisbane. It is my understanding that when the National Highway concept was established in the early 1970's, a decision was made that the prefered through route for long-distance traffic and road freight was to be the New England Highway and not the Pacific Highway. This was somewhat controversial at the time. The map currently displayed with the article reflects this - the Pacific Highway between Newcastle and Brisbane is not on it. The New England highway had less mountains, less bridges, fewer towns with local traffic conflicts, fewer low-speed winding sections, and was considered easier to upgrade, compared to the Pacific highway of that era.
However, around 1990, two very bad bus crashes drew attention to the Pacific Highway. Due to the rapid increase in population of the NSW North Coast region, road upgrades to meet regional needs were inevitable, regardless of national network needs. The decision was apparently made to eventually upgrade the Pacific Highway to dual carriageway standard over its entire length, to meet increasing population needs and also to become the primary inter-capital travel and road freight corridor. It looks like this will be achieved after about 30 years since 1990. Upgrades to the New England highway almost completely ceased, and due to travel-time improvements on the Pacific highway, it is apparently no longer the prefered semi-trailer route between Sydney and Brisbane as it used to be in the 1970's and 1980's.
It is my understanding that the National Highway was eventually brought into concordance with the reality on the ground, and the Pacific Highway between Newcastle and Brisbane was included. Was the New England highway excluded ? Or are both included now ? Perhaps we need an up-to-date map which shows this.Eregli bob (talk) 02:00, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
- OR doesn't belong in the article, we need factual reliable and verifiable sources supporting the text/content. Bidgee (talk) 02:25, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
- Quite so. That is what I am researching. The current map is very out of date. This article has been flagged since 2009 as being inadequately referenced. Since it is no longer called the National Highway, perhaps the title is no longer suitable.Eregli bob (talk) 03:07, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
