Proposed merge with Bay Ridge Branch

- If I understand correctly, the Bay Ridge Branch article refers to the tracks south of the Fresh Pond junction, while this article refers to the tracks north of the junction. Epicgenius (talk) 13:08, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

- Well, the physical lines seem to be concurrent. However, north of FP, the New York & Atlantic Railway operates the line (the Fremont Secondary at this point), while south of FP, the Long Island Rail Road operates it. – Epicgenius (talk) 21:13, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
They were built by the same RR (as shown on the map in the connecing rr page), and remained controlled by one rr until the LIRR bought the southern portion of the line from CONRAIL sometime in the late 1970s-early 1980s, then the northern portion was owned by conrail to access the interchange with the LIRR, and subsequently the NY&A, and the southern portion was used by the LIRR then the NY&A to serve local customers and to interchange with the NYNJ at 65th street. - Oppose The were not built by the same railroad. The Bay Ridge Branch was built decades before the Hell Gate Bridge and has always been a part of the LIRR. When the latter was built the two were connected, but the Bay Ridge Branch was not built because of the Hell Gate. More importantly, the Bay Ridge was never owned by the New Haven. Don't forget, that the Hell Gate/Connecting Railroad project was a joint venture of the New Haven and the Pennsy, which owned the LIRR at the time; that's why the New Haven was allowed to use it. But they never owned it. It was and is LIRR property. (No, the NYAR does not own it. The NYAR owns no trackage at all, they lease the freight only tracks from the LIRR as part of their franchise). So they should not be merged, as they have separate histories, and are not the same line; this merge proposal is based on a misunderstanding. oknazevad (talk) 13:54, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
