Spam removal
[edit]I'm removing the spam from this discussion page. The Newbuyport article itself needs work. What is an internet sow? Where is Bossy Gillis? 129.55.27.4 16:14, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Random comments
[edit]people clearly need to stop editting random comments about themselves and others. who cares about the last residents. they're clearly not notable given their grammatical errors. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.158.13.201 (talk) 12:27, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Be serious
[edit]I know it is tough for residents to resist putting in local jokes and comments. Keep in mind, however, this is not an article of local scope. The whole world gets to read it (if they care to). An encyclopedic tone is most appropriate. The world wants to know something about this place on the map. When you go to look up information about a city in France or England you don't expect to find corny jokes instead of information. Reciprocation is a genuine moral principle and certainly is the basis of courtesy. I went over this cleaning it up and adding a little. More can be added. I think you can see the direction in which it should go. We got ecology and history and tourism but also facilities that make it a good place to live and it does have access not only to Boston but also to Lawrence, Lowell and Manchester NH. Your turn now. Thanks.Dave 20:24, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
True, true:
[edit]Indeed you are right. As a resident, I have good resources and I shall try to help. However, I do think people were just trying to be informative. 24.62.186.84 17:58, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
Family income
[edit]An anon added the following claim to the Demographics section: "A more accurate assessment by the local newspaper estimates the average family income to be rougly $120,000, based on cost of living statistics and housing data."
Since this is uncited, doesn't defend its claim to be "more accurate", and is nearly twice as much as the Census Bureau's reported average family income, I figured it should be removed. But I'll leave it on the talk page in case someone can come up with a cite for it. AJD (talk) 19:14, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
- Update: This is true; currently in the process of finding the newspaper's issue date to add as a reference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.206.142.114 (talk) 16:31, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
Smallest city?
[edit]I've heard that Newburyport is the smallest city in Massachusetts. Is this true, and if so, does it warrant being added to the article? 98.216.113.169 (talk) 12:25, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
- I agree but you need an encyclopedic source - hearsay will not do. You are welcome to do the research and make the insertion.Dave (talk) 12:21, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
John Slaughter and vital stats
[edit]John, for some reason you wanted your name on this external link. John Slaughter, John Slaughter, John Slaughter. There now. Unless you designed the web site for vital stats, you can't have it in the article. From here I get an essentially dead link. I don't know what work you did but what appears is an invitation to do birth and death record lookups in Massachusetts. There is nothing distinctive here for NP. Anyone can do Internet lookups of such stats under any circumstances, just as with real estate. No reason to load our article with it, or your name either. WP is an encyclopedia not a real estate agency, genealogical firm or legal office. Thanks John. We can't allow you any more publicity than this on this item. Have you written about NP? Even if you have, you can't insert your own work.Dave (talk) 12:30, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
Bibliography and references
[edit]The Bibliography has to go below the refs. That is because the template:harv template system creates a link to a subsequent biblio item one has set up. When I worked on this article I did not have as much experience so I failed in setting it up. I do apologize; I've misled you. I was hoping someone would fix it but I seem to be the only one available still. I will be fixing this. I also erred in a few other ways I will be fixing. I actually advertise for Google Books, which is not allowed. In case you did not know, Google is not in any way a non-profit organization. I cannot say more about them but I will be fixing the entries. In bibliographic entries the editor does not comment on the item; he only specifies it. I'm taking out the links to Google unless there is a reason to leave them in; we are not selling Google. They change those links frequently anyway. I think it is safe to say their discovery of the copyright laws is on-going, just as is WP's or anyone's.Dave (talk) 12:51, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
