Background

[edit]
1841 map

Oncenawhile, very interesting background can be found in this paper. There was even an earlier (misnamed) "Ordnance Survey of Jerusalem". Zerotalk 11:20, 23 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

FYI paper is online at [1] Onceinawhile (talk) 22:37, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Zero0000: After much searching, I have found a copy of the earlier map you referred to here. It is also discussed in these two sources (a century apart): [2] and [3]. Onceinawhile (talk) 22:03, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, now I found it on my computer too but I don't remember how it got there. I have thousands of maps. Zerotalk 02:13, 27 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Zero0000: do you happen to have copies of the other 1840-41 British maps of Palestine and Syria? I have started adding to commons: Category:1840–41 Royal Engineers maps of Palestine and Syria. I might create a new article called 1840–41 Royal Engineers maps of Palestine and Syria. Onceinawhile (talk) 22:03, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
On a related note, if I manage to get Cartography of Jerusalem to Featured List, I would like to create a similar article on Cartography of Palestine. It is a more complex task though, as I can imagine it will be even trickier to define a manageable scope (although I am yet to read the scholarly literature on it). @Zero0000: your thousands of maps comment has inspired me to get on with my Cartography of Palestine plan. I have managed to get hold of the primary literature on the topic (most of which is online), and will make a start. I’ll let you know if there are maps I can’t find scans of. Sandreczki's list

[edit]

The list of Sandreczki is appended to Ariel's facsimile edition of the Survey, starting at page 182. I don't think it appeared with the original, but I'm not sure. The numbers in the list correspond to this map. There is a wealth of information there. Zerotalk 11:52, 27 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
