Felms Court
[edit]Yes, I lived at the Plainview Road house from July 1990 to November 1998. I have just included the names of the architect and his family. I am sure that can be checked, though I don't have access to public records of architects, and I can't get the correct link to the Bethpage High School alumni listing, where I know at least one of the Glucksman kids attended. --Magmagirl (talk) 17:30, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
- Can someone help with this? I don't even know where to begin to find the information about the original architect numbering 780 Plainview Road at random, the naming of Felms Court, etc. --Magmagirl (talk) 19:40, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
Why is this page like a wikia
[edit]This page needs to be down scaled. Wikipedia is not this in depth for such an unimportant area. Rather this page looks like a Wikia —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.194.188.223 (talk) 02:48, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
That would seem to be contrary to the WikiProject Long Island which is attempting to expand topics related to Long Island. In any case, this entry doesn't seem any more detailed than most towns from Long Island.Tgpaul58 (talk) 15:19, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
History
[edit]There was a comment questioning the veracity of the name change of Manneto Hill to Plainview being caused by the post office refusing to allow a post office because of a similar name to a post office in upstate NY since this post office does not exist today. I have included a reference to the story. It should be noted that many of the post offices in upstate NY that existed in the 1800s no longer exist. It would be interesting to get more detail about where this post office was.Tgpaul58 (talk) 15:24, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
- There are lots of myths that get retold by chamber of commerce websites, and the myths often developed as a smokescreen for something else (per Bethpage & "Central Park Post Office"). There ought to be some info available on a google search ( http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&rlz=1T4GGIC_enCA286CA286&q=manetto+hill+hills+-plainview&btnG=Search&meta= ) for another Manetto Hill - even if it is not a post office -- and there does not seem to be ANY place else in NY ever called Manetto Hill. Sometimes these stories get started as outright lies by people favoring one name over another. For Nassau County, http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Civil/Nassau.P.O.html covers post office history to 1879. http://longislandgenealogy.com/1891/Marriages/Grooms_HI.html has both names http://books.google.com/books?id=DNkmw30tbrYC&pg=PA7&lpg=PA7&dq=1885+manetto+hill&source=bl&ots=gciKD6z2Nq&sig=Ijpu4aFTuT4WEX0khNkfmWDS_lE&hl=en&ei=jbkRSquMNpryswPO0uH6Ag&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8#PPA8,M1 would be more reliable than the chamber of commerce - but who's to say it is not just another retelling, with wikipedia being his source. Perhaps we can find the earliest source, at least. http://www.archive.org/stream/longislanditsear297armb/longislanditsear297armb_djvu.txt (from 1914) does not tell the story - and has Manetto Hill but no mention of Plainview --JimWae (talk) 19:48, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
- There are two problems. First, the article says that the names were similar but not identical. In the days before zip codes, "Monetto Hill" may have been confused with "Manetto Hill". Second, I can't find any other reason for the name change. Early documents (copies are available at the POB library) identify the area as being "Manetto Hill" with the switch in the late 19th century. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tgpaul58 (talk • contribs) 12:30, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
North Shore
[edit]Numerous editors have gone back and forth on whether Plainview is considered to be on the North Shore of Long Island. To date, no one has provided a valid source to describe which towns are considered to be on the North Shore and which aren't. As a result, I have inserted language which makes Plainview's designation as a North Shore town conditional. If anyone disagrees, please respond here. ButtonwoodTree (talk) 23:41, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
- I will be editing this page again regarding Plainview's purported location on the North Shore. Please respond here with a source or objective basis for a definitive statement that it is on the North Shore. ButtonwoodTree (talk) 11:57, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
- Hospital in Plainview has been called Central General. Plainview is home to Mid Island Y Jewish Community Centre, Mid-Island Allergy Group. True, parts of north & east Plainview are hilly - but so are many parts of Old Bethpage & Melville & even extreme-north Farmingdale. There is no "boundary". --JimWae (talk) 21:56, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
- I agree. To me, it's pretty far from definitive. However, we've got a rogue editor who refuses to address the issue. I've deleted the entire reference, but this editor keeps reinserting it. I've tried to hedge the language (indicating the view that it's on the North Shore is held "by some"), but he/she keeps deleting that as well. Getting pretty tiresome. Demographics & Long Island
[edit]The demographics section uses 2007 estimates. Many of the numbers have been radically changed from earlier 2012 versions. The whole section needs updating to 2010 census, so I will not bother to revert to old numbers. Also, there is no longer any mention in the lede of Long Island & one must read very far into the article to encounter it at all. Same for Town of Oyster Bay. See this series of edits & this 2013-MAY-24 edit .--JimWae (talk) 21:15, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
