The description of Dorgeles' book seems overly harsh, given the information presented in the article. Was it merely a "jingoistic pamphlet" or was it a novel of actual literary merit that, as it turns out, was very patriotic? 86.164.58.149 18:59, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

a "Jingoistic pamphlet" ? Is that a joke ? This book describes the life in the trenchs, it's certainly not propaganda, it's a masterpiece. I remove this line that was added by an anonymous IP. And by the way, I've never heard of a real controversy between Proust and Dorgelès. But well...

Is the Prix Goncourt for the best novel written in France or for the best novel written in French? For example, could a Quebec writer win it?

it's possible but rare; ref. Antonine Maillet (1979), Amin Maalouf (1993) Sighrik 02:26, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's for the novel of the year written in french. (Andreï Makine, Jonathan Littell, etc...) (spiper) 18:28, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling

[edit]

Generally the prize is known in English sources as "Prix Goncourt", with the P capitalized no matter where in a sentence it is located (ie. treated as a proper noun). In French it is "Le prix Concourt" with the P lowercase (unless at the start of a sentence, or a shorthand version such as in a list next to a name). Although in French sources it can also be seen with a capital P but this is not entirely correct French. So although in French it is proper to lowercase the P, in English it is generally kept uppercase as a matter of convention/common use as a proper noun. In French it can also sometime be referred to as just "Goncourt" with no prix at all. Green Cardamom (talk) 19:04, 30 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've made changes per the above where it is "the Prix Goncourt" (rather than le prix etc). Ericoides (talk) 14:14, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The film column

[edit]

Does this really belong here? I mean it's good to mention in the article of each book if it's been adapted into a film, but it hasn't really got anything to do with the Prix Goncourt. It's not the films that win the award. Smetanahue (talk) 20:56, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I see your point in a strict sense but they are also interrelated. For example I find it interesting to sort on the film-date column to see cultural patterns, namely how influential the Goncourt is over time by the number of award-winning books that get adapted to film. This was more common in some decades than others. How people use this data we can't know but it's interrelated in interesting ways. Only the first three columns are strictly needed, you can ignore the data your not interested in. Green Cardamom (talk) 04:26, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
