I'm doubting it was 1850s, Lee was stationed there in the early 1830s and he referred to it by that name.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:44, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I question the positing that the name came from the Know-Nothing Movement in the 1840's when the area was called such during Andrew Jackson's White House years according to John Meacham's Pulitzer Prize-winning book "American Lion."
