Wikipedia biography norms and references
[edit]The IP user who is most frequent editor of this article seems averse to notices such as "BLP Unreferenced" and "Wikify" and persists in removing them. So I'll use the Talk page to try to explain. There are two sets of norms here:
- WP:BLP and especially the requirements for Neutral Point of View and Verifiability. That means referencing the facts in the article text. That is what the "BLP Unreferenced" flag demands.
- Wikify: A Wikipedia biography should be an article more than a list of (ureferenced) gigs, sessions, etc. The text should also be fact-based rather than PR hyperbole - in this an encyclopaedia differs from a press release. Take the 2nd sentence here as an example "Roman subdues audiences with virtuous playing, improvisation flight and melodic tunes all captured in his well-mixed recordings and enthralling live performances." Almost every word is problematic - "subdues", "well-mixed" and "enthralling" each invite a "citation reqd" notice; "virtuous playing " is presumably mean to to be "virtuoso playing" rather than a moral comment. I'm minded to remove the sentence altogether but suspect it would just be reinstated by the IP user, so I'm using this comment to allow him to rethink the sentence first.

- Please also note that a proper reference is something more than a Blog posting and should directly relate to the claim being made. AllyD (talk) 20:46, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
What the rules are
[edit]Here are some notes for the person who was reverting my edits. If you create an account and a Talk page, it's possible to communicate with each other. I suggest you read more of the Wikipedia documentation. You shouldn't delete or revert edits without an explanation. "I want it this way" isn't an explanation or a good reason. If you continue to edit this way, you will find yourself blocked.
Wikipedia isn't a newspaper or magazine or television or radio. It isn't supposed to advertise or promote a person's work or abilities. It doesn't exist to sell, whether it's to sell books, albums, or tickets to concerts.
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Its approach is formal, businesslike, and impartial. Its information is documented with citations to independent, reliable sources.
You can't copy and paste information from a person's official site. That's called plagiarism. It's both illegal in America and against the rules of Wikipedia. If English isn't your first language, you might have difficulty with paraphrasing. If you have demonstrated that you don't write grammatical English, you shouldn't change the grammar of someone who does. If the language is a problem, you should know that Wikipedia sites exist in other languages.
Wikipedia doesn't intend to write every detail about every person's life. Some details of an entry are more important than others. An entry shouldn't be a grocery list of trivia that is updated every day.
