Latin version

[edit]

I have a couple of queries over the suggested Latin form of this maxim.

The article offers Roma uno die non est condita. As a matter of straightforward meaning, is condita accurate (translating the French faite)? I think of conditus / condita as meaning founded (as in the standard phrase expressing dates, AUC: ab urbe condita, from the city['s] foundation) - rather than built / completed.

And as to style, word-order is much freer in Latin, and would normally be used in a maxim or quip like this to convey emphasis, with the key words placed at beginning and end. (And unnecessary words would be avoided). So (but staying with condita for built) I'd suggest Una die non condita Roma. (Condita includes the meaning of English was.) 2A04:B2C2:1001:8400:A83F:CFD9:8328:C2F2 (talk) 16:08, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
