I'd like to get some thoughts on this image (the lead image). What makes it PD-US? It would be a bit of a bummer to lose it. Apterygial 06:48, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
- Hmm, it looks bad. Certainly not blanket PD as clearly published post-1923. The original uploader provides no source info so this image is liable for immediate deletion from Commons anyway. Pyrope 16:40, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
- Probably not, although the user uploading it de:User:Stahlkocher was an sysop at Commons and is one at de-wiki (assuming they are the same as there is no SUL) and might be knowledgeable as to the source of the image. I have left them a note at their de-wiki talk page, maybe they can solve the "riddle". Regards SoWhy 09:11, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
- According to the original uploader, it was released in the US without a copyright notice, which should make it eligible for public domain (the Commons tag has been changed accordingly). Regards SoWhy 10:10, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
While on the subject of images, this one also looks a bit dodgy. Uploader claims to hold copyright and releases to Public Domain, but the photographer is listed as 'unknown'. Thoughts? AlexJ (talk) 19:49, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
- I left a note at the uploader's Italian talk page (they still appear to be reasonably active there) asking for a confirmation of the license and details. If I don't get a result in a week I'll probably email them. Apterygial 21:52, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
- From what I can tell, if it is published pot-1923 with an unknown author the copyright term is 120 years... Pyrope 12:32, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
- Have emailed. Apterygial 04:26, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
- Got that sorted. In short, the picture was never published, and TFopper found it in an old photo album. Therefore, he does have the right to release to public domain. Just that really important picture left to sort out. Apterygial 23:34, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Random comments
[edit]More random stuff, nothing major:
- "from his fourteenth birthday wanted to be a racing driver" Sounds slightly odd to me - why such a specific day? But if that's what the ref says, then no problem, obviously!
- You are right, that is odd, but it's what the ref says. I wonder what happened on his fourteenth birthday? Apterygial 10:55, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
- "Later that year.." It's a little while since the year was mentioned, and this is the start of a new para, so I'd suggest "Later in 1923..."
- What was the racing scene in Germany at the time that Caracciola was starting his career? Can anything be built into the first three paras to indicate this?
- It would be useful to explain (briefly!) the significance of the national Grands Prix as well.
- Do you mean the German GP, or the national GPs in general? Apterygial 10:55, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
- "by the time they had begun moving" > "by the time they began moving"?
More to come... 4u1e (talk) 06:49, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
- Inaugural Monaco GP : Worth mentioning that RC started on the back row because he drew a slot there, since qualifying as used today had not yet been introduced?
- " He won the RAC Tourist Trophy in slippery conditions, and established his reputation as a specialist in wet track racing." Since the Regenmeister accolade has already been mentioned, perhaps 'confirmed' or 'further enhanced' his reputation?
- Confirmed. Apterygial 10:55, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
- "Perhaps his most significant achievement of 1931 was his win in the Mille Miglia." and "Perhaps his only real disappointment in 1932 was his loss to Manfred von Brauchitsch at the Avusrennen." Better if these views could be attributed to someone.
- Don't know how I could do that. The sources which cover the info mention the significance of each race. Apterygial 10:55, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
- "Von Brauchitsch drove an SSK" Privately entered?
- I would say so. Apterygial 10:55, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
- At the 1933 Monaco GP, I'm slightly confused that three of the brakes failed on the way out of the chicane. Can this be clarified?
- Terrible wording isn't it? I've changed it to something a bit more sensical. Apterygial 10:55, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
More later, hopefully. 4u1e (talk) 06:19, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Driver's License
[edit]There are some discrepancies about the age at which he received his driver's license. The German Wikipedia entry cites "special circumstances" which allowed him to obtain a license at the age of 15. The official city of Remagen website lists his age at either 15 [1] or 16 [2]. Does anyone have some verifiable details? Mabuse (talk) 03:19, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
- Your German is clearly much better than mine! The only source I could find when I was writing this was the source I used, Bolsinger and Becker, who say that he gained it before the age of eighteen, which seems essentially a catch-all for what the Remagen website says. Apterygial 04:07, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
- Interesting! This is certainly worth noting because according to the history of drivers' licenses in Germany here [3] the legal age at the time was 18. I'll edit the section accordingly. Mabuse (talk) 03:56, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
