With some amazement, I have seen an admin wreaking havoc upon a contributor, and simply block him, just because said admin does not know German orthography.

First, the "ß" letter has never been abolished in the German language and still persists under new orthography. Secondly, after a long vowel like here, the "ß" is still de rigueur; it has only been replaced now after short vowels (like Faß -> Fass, muß -> muss).
