It seems very odd that this article doesn’t seem to mention *why* he was being sent to prison, at the time he faked his suicide, or that Bayou was a (possibly initially unintentional) scam? There’s also a book about him and his financial dealings, Octopus: Sam Israel, the Secret Market, and the World's Wildest Con by Guy Lawson (there’s also an edition of This American Life about him, also presented by Lawson).
