Borough

[edit]

Sandy Hook is DEFINATELY NOT a borough... the only borough currently in Fairfield county is Newtown (borough). It is a neighborhood. Rpgman456 01:54, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox

[edit]

I added and started the infobox, but others may wish to add to its contents.--Epeefleche (talk) 09:43, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How did Sandy Hook get its name?

[edit]

Many articles on places have information on how they acquired their names. Do we know for this one? HiLo48 (talk) 10:25, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My first thought was that it was somehow named after Sandy Hook in New Jersy, but that is some 90 miles south. Searching Google Books I found Connecticut Historical Collections published by John Warner Barber mentioning the area had sandy patches and looking at the map the river does hook there. <meaningful pause> I couldn't find a direct reference explaining the name. But the people settling the area were so creative as to call their new town "Newtown", I wouldn't hope too much to find an interesting story behind the name. Why are the Notable people, notable

[edit]

Hi Folks, I'm a complete outsider to this community and after reading the article I have no idea why any (except for Adam Lanza) of the people on the "Notable people" list are important to Sandy Hook. Anyone opposed to adding some inline references?--Scalhotrod - Just your average banjo playing, drag racing, cowboy... (talk) 01:20, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Luther Meade Blackman…was born in Sandy Hook, Newtown, in Fairfield County, Connecticut…
William Hamilton Gibson…was born in Sandy Hook, Connecticut…
Albert B. Rossdale…moved to Sandy Hook, Connecticut…
Mead Treadwell…grew up in the Sandy Hook section of Newtown, Connecticut…
Thelma Wood…moved to Sandy Hook, Connecticut…
The above 5 individuals mention this in their articles. The others do not, although several mention nearby cities and towns. Bus stop (talk) 02:01, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't it simply assumed that they are all past/present residents of the town? What else could it possibly mean? Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 02:13, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, I do not think that adding phrases such as "was born in SH", "grew up in SH", or "moved to SH" is of any value. Those are all just variations on the same theme (i.e., they were all residents at one point in their lives). No? Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 02:15, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently not if we can only confirm 5 on the list. Maybe the others are from one of the "communities of Berkshire, Riverside, Walnut Tree Hill, and Zoar" that make up Sandy Hook.--Scalhotrod - Just your average banjo playing, drag racing, cowboy... (talk) 02:19, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If they are from a community that "makes up" Sandy Hook, then they are still from Sandy Hook. And, I don't think that the others can't be confirmed ... it's probably just a matter of laziness, where editors did not bother to confirm (cite sources). Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 04:26, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I had a similar thought regarding previous editors simply not bothering to confirm, but then I checked each one. A couple of them had no discernible connection to Newtown, Sandy Hook, or any of its communities and were removed. Unforetunately, the random edits have started. At least one IP editor has tried to remove Lanza from the list.--Scalhotrod - Just your average banjo playing, drag racing, cowboy... (talk) 19:25, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I found a few more to add to the list. Can you fill in the current politicians since you're local? Thx!--Scalhotrod - Just your average banjo playing, drag racing, cowboy... (talk) 21:24, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
