Secondary sources

[edit]
Resolved

This article needs some literary criticism from secondary sources. (Looks like you have some! Good!) Referencing material from wikiquote probably isn't a good idea either. Use an off-wiki version of the play. Wrad (talk) 18:39, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is this better?
http://etext.library.adelaide.edu.au/mirror/classics.mit.edu/Shakespeare/tempest/full.html
I've changed the references to it. Thanks, George D. Watson (Dendodge).TalkHelp and assistance 18:51, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yep. What are these "Matthew Humberstone School" refs? Wrad (talk) 18:53, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's things I learnt at school. It's not original research because it was published in a textbook I can't remember the name of. Thanks, George D. Watson (Dendodge).TalkHelp and assistance 19:00, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
When I get back to school next week I'll find out. Thanks, George D. Watson (Dendodge).TalkHelp and assistance 19:07, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox

[edit]
Resolved

What infobox template should I use for this page? Thanks, George D. Watson (Dendodge).TalkHelp and assistance 20:32, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We don't really use infoboxes for Shakespeare characters. Wrad (talk) 20:34, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, it might be a good idea to make one though. I can't properly but if someone can it might improve all articles on Shakespeare characters. Just an idea. Thanks, George D. Watson (Dendodge).TalkHelp and assistance 20:42, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've made one specifically for this article. I made a bit of a mess of it but it's better than nothing. If anyone can make it better please do. Thanks, George D. Watson (Dendodge).TalkHelp and assistance 21:14, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

About character articles

[edit]

For ideas on how to improve this article, have a look at these guidelines Wrad (talk) 21:27, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done that. I've made the sections but they're too short to qualify as real sections. Can anyone add to them? Thanks, George D. Watson (Dendodge).TalkHelp and assistance 21:34, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The origin section's just about long enough now but the performance history's still amazingly short. Thanks, George D. Watson (Dendodge).TalkHelp and assistance 17:33, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This needs moving

[edit]
Resolved

It should be at Stephano (Shakespeare) - ie with a space before the opening bracket. Because that page has two history entries it can't be moved simply, but this page should redirect there, not the other way around as now. Loganberry (Talk) 21:43, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I made a typing mistake when making the page. I can't move this one until the version with the space is deleted. If an admin could do so please, I would be very grateful. Thanks, George D. Watson (Dendodge).TalkHelp and assistance 15:24, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've moved it (and I'm not an admin!) --GuillaumeTell (talk) 12:00, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's because I CSD'd the one with the space. --Michael WhiteT·C 15:44, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sources: Web/book?

[edit]
Resolved

What's better, an on-line or a published source? I have a copy of Shakespeare's complete works (c.1896) at home or the sources referenced in the article. I just wondered which is better. Thanks, George D. Watson (Dendodge).TalkHelp and assistance 19:58, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say they're both fine. Wrad (talk) 20:22, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For now I'll stick with the on-line sources, that way people can look them up. Thanks, George D. Watson (Dendodge).TalkHelp and assistance 20:33, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Performance History

[edit]

I just wanted to let you know I have edited this portion. I will look for changes in the character of Stephano over time later in terms of performance history, but at least, I hope, this meets editorial review and lays a proper foundation for later expansion. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Yachtsman1 (talkcontribs) 16:36, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, did a quick review of the article:
  • The article relies far too much on primary sources (i.e. the play itself). It needs good secondary sources.
  • The image of Stephano in the infobox fails to render and appears to be a hand-drawn scetch. This should probably be a picture of an actor playing Stephano in a suitable staging of the play.
  • Character Traits and Analysis reads like it was the article's author doing the analysis. This would fall under the Synthesis and Original Research policies. The section needs to be rewritten to reference a Reliable Source which does the analysis.
  • The Plan is oddly named, and is a list. It should be converted to prose.
  • The quotes in Quotes seem excessive. Trim the longest, or maybe even spread them around as text boxes in the other sections.
  • The Performance history section needs to be expanded. At a minimum it should contain discussion of notable interpretations of the character.
  • Origins seems to talk about Shakespeare's motivations for creating the character, but I would have expected tis section to discuss from what sources Shakespeare drew while when writing it. Is The Tempest perhaps based on earlier works that included the character? If not, did Shakespeare take just the character of Stephano from an earlier source and include him in the play? Are there analogues to the Stephano character or character type in other of Shakespeare's plays? In plays or novels by other people?
  • The language is also generally poor in the article. The author seems to have been a bit uncertain about what style of prose to employ on Wikipedia (I don't blame you: Encyclopedic isn't all that helpful a description). A more confident, but still neutral, voice would do wonders there. Some sentences are also staccato and listy, and could use polish to be more narrative.
This was really quick and just skimming the top, but should hopefully give some ideas for where to focus attention. Great work so far! --Xover (talk) 21:26, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
