A note
[edit]I question whether the root of the name is Asian as Europeans called Mahogany Mahagoni before there were trees of the species in Asia. I think that it may be Taino or Siboney. RichardBond (talk) 17:26, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
Another Note: — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.7.82.228 (talk) 01:17, 21 October 2017 (UTC) I seriously doubt the boats in World War II were made of Swietenia mahagoni since the species was harvested to endangered point by the 1890s. It's much more like the boats were made of Swietenia macrophylla since that's what was cheap and available at the time.
