Quotation of Mozart string duo?

An edit I just reverted suggests that Haydn got the main theme of the second movement from a string duo by Mozart. It was clever of the contributor to notice the resemblance (both works are on line and can easily be checked), but I'm actually very skeptical of this hypothesis. The overlap of the two themes is brief, and both tempo and affect are quite different. Lastly, it's verboten (for good reasons) to put personal insights of this kind on WP (see WP:NOR; if some published scholar has noticed the resemblance it would ok to include it. Double bass part

Haydn really did mean for double basses to be included in performances of this work. IMSLP helpfully provides a scan of the original manuscript, and which has separate lines for cellos and double basses. To be sure, very often the basses just double the cellos, but the intent that they be present, and that they not always just follow the cello part, is clear.

It would have been better, I think, to retain the old version of this article that simply specified "strings" for all five string instruments employed. This is clear to most readers and would follow the normal practice observed in books and concert programs. Opus33 (talk) 18:02, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
