Editing denied

[edit]

I was just trying to add another use of Taj to the disambiguation page, but it came up that the change was denied. I believe this was because I was trying to make the change from a public library computer (but they seem to be able to let me edit other pages, including this talk page) so can anyone guess why this was?--TimothyJacobson (talk) 14:06, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, done it now. But still wondering what happened??? --TimothyJacobson (talk) 12:18, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Taj is a Persian word

[edit]

IP falsified the origin of word in this edit [1]. I fixed and restored the correct revision. Please check Wiktionary and other etymology sources. All of them confirm Taj is a Persian loanword in Arabic. --188.158.84.111 (talk) 20:24, 18 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Taj is given as Arabic in the Muslim name book by Salahuddin Ahmed. It also appears in Wehr's Arabic dictionary. I fully accept that Taj is also Persian, and it may well be he case that the Arabic borrowed from the Persian, but the way to establsih that is to provide reliable sources, not to delete those already there like this. And Wiktionary is rightly not allowed as a WP:RS.
Do not revert my edit. I guess you're not familiar with Arabic and Persian. Your source is not a dictionary or etymology source, it's just a book of names. The word is not Arabic. Arabic form is a direct loanword from Persian. Of course, Wiktionary is a reliable source. If you don't agree with me, ask a Wiktionary editor to come here and clarify it for you. You can add Arabic form, but you must mention it's a borrowing from Persian. Your revision is wrong. You just restored falsified version by an IP, and then ignored all etymological and linguistic facts. If you're not familiar with this topic, ask another editor to come here. An editor from languages project. --188.159.144.207 (talk) 05:30, 20 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's regrettable that your lack of familiarity with wikipedia conventions is preventing us from arriving at the amicable consensus which would otherwise certainly be possible. It might help if you studied WP:CIVIL for a start. I neither believe nor disbelieve your claim of expertise, and your denial of my expertise is equally irrelevant. We both must substantiate what we say by reference to reliable sources. Wiktionary and other similar parts of the wikipedia world cannot be accepted as WP:RS since oherwise there could easily be circularities in the sourcing chain.
Taj is given as an Arabic word in all Arabic dictionaries e.g.[1][2], together with cognate words for "to crown", "coronation" etc. If you want wikpedia to say that it is a Persian word, all you have to do is provide a reliable source with that information. If you do so we will easily be able to agree on what to put in the article. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 23:38, 20 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Taqiyah (cap)?

[edit]

I came to the article confused. I left more confused.

In the "Other" section I added Taqiyah (cap). I think it's what oxforddictionaries.com calls taj. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AllThatJazz2012 (talkcontribs) 21:10, 11 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
