This should be dedicated to Telex the network
[edit]I propose moving the contents to Telex (disambiguation) (which already exists as a redirect) and dedicating this page to the Telex network. Nearly every incoming link refers to the network, which was very important for about half a century. Adpete (talk) 07:35, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
- p.s. I've begun it as Telex (network), just a paste of sections from Telegraphy. Adpete (talk) 07:47, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
Requested move
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: Page moved. The OED, EB, and MW all agree that the primary meaning is the teleprinter-exchange, and that the secondary meaning is a message sent over the exchange. ~~~~
Telex → Telex (disambiguation) — The communications network (a major network for several decades) is far, far more significant than the other "Telex" pages (a Belgian band, and an uncited article on Vietnamese writing) so "Telex" should be the network, not a dab page. Nearly every incoming link refers to the network. There's a reason for this: everyone over a certain age automatically equates "telex" with the network or sending a telex message. Telex (disambiguation) currently exists only as a redirect with only one edit in its history, so it's save to delete this before the move. Adpete (talk) 02:39, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose move. The appropriate criterion is not importance but primary usage. IMO, Telex has no primary usage but may equally apply to to the network, the corporation or the device. Accordingly the current page is sufficient and appropriate. It might be acceptable (but unnecessary additional work) to create a Telex (disambiguation) article to which Telex would redirect but it is IMO unacceptable to rename Telex (network) → Telex. - FWIW, a Google search on "Telex" yields as its first entry a link to Telex Communications which as the ongoing entity is most likely the primary usage. There are no hits for the Telex Device or the Telex Network on the first page, but "telex machine" is listed as a "search related to Telex". Google is not the greatest evidence, but this does suggest that Telex (network) is not the primary usage of Telex. Tom94022 (talk) 16:50, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
- FWIW 8 of the 9 currently live US "Telex" trademarks are currently owned by Bosch, the owner of Telex Communications. The 9th is bakery products. Further evidence that the primary usage is NOT Telex (network). Tom94022 (talk) 22:26, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
- I don't know if the plain google search is skewed to companies or domain names, but google news, books, scholar and images all favour telex messages or machines (i.e. the network) by a large margin. Where the company is used, it's usually qualified like "Telex Corporation". Also, for what it's worth, online Encyclopædia Britannica has an article on the network but not the company. - Support move. The original meaning, the network, is still the primary usage despite its demise. Andrewa (talk) 07:08, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose move, since there are several telephony topics known as "telex" and the article Telex (network), created only this month, has not been shown to be the clear primary topic. 69.3.72.249 (talk) 19:56, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
- Reply - Article age doesn't really matter, but in any case "Telex" was for many years a part of the Telegraphy article. For clear primary topic, I again refer people to the incoming links to Telex from other Wikipedia articles[1] - nearly all refer to the network (or more precisely, to a message sent on the network). Adpete (talk) 22:42, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
- Comment: Agree. This is good evidence that the word telex (even if capitalised Telex) on its own still refers to a message on the network. Old films, songs (eg Flanders and Swann's Sounding Brass: "You can always telex me: Micflan, England.") etc. keep this usage alive. No change of vote. Andrewa (talk) 13:41, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
