Although the surname Telford may be of different origin to the name Telfer, my research of my own family tree leading to the North Tyne valley from the 17th Century onward point to a different conclusion. Surnames of my antecedents occur variously as Telfer, Telford, Telfor and Taleford. There are Tailfords at present living in the Keilder area. Some times an indivuals surname is spelt differently at different times and sometimes even on documents relating to the same event e.g. a wedding. These variations are perhaps due to the attempts of the scribes, whoever they were to right down the surname as it was pronounced in a strong Northumbrian accent. I will furnish examples from my family tree at a later date. Meanwhile if anyone has any information as to the migration from Scotland of the Telfers Talefords et al. I would like to hear it. My own quest started with a desire to find out if Jamie Telfer in the Border Ballad of "Jamie Telfer in the Fair Dod Head" was an actual person.
