Rhyming?

[edit]
In Shadbolt's accent, the words 'where' and 'mayor' rhyme.

Is this unusual for NZ English? I'm from England, and over here the two words almost always rhyme. Loganberry (Talk) 03:25, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've spent almost 40 years in New Zealand, and I think it's unusual for these two words to sound as similar as Shadbolt made them in that advertisement. He may have done so deliberately. It is common to pronounce 'mayor' as 'mayer', but Shadbolt said something closer to 'mare', with only one syllable (but a long 'a' sound). Perhaps rhyme isn't exactly the way to phrase it. Other kiwis who remember the advert can comment; maybe I'm misremembering it.-gadfium 03:39, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I live in Wellington Region; most of us come from pretty rural areas (compared to the city), and so we do have pretty pronounced NZ accents. We commonly say 'Mayor' as 'Mare', so yes, it would rhyme. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.89.40.34 (talk) 07:43, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am a sixth-generation New Zealander with a Masters degree in Applied Linguistics. In New Zealand English, "mayor" is pronounced the same as "mare". So "mayor" and "where" rhyme perfectly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Newzild (talkcontribs) 01:46, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
