Relationship to John Ball (golfer)
[edit]There are references to this family being related to John Ball (golfer). This seems to be incorrect. Contemporary newspapers do not mention it. There seems to be confusion between two families.
John Ball (the famous amateur golfer) was the son of John and Margaret. John was an Innkeeper and they lived in Hoylake. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F737-3HP https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VBNC-3RT
William (Tom's father) was the son of John and Mary. John was a farmer and they lived in Little Meols. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VBNC-LTJ Confusingly William had a brother John born about the same time as John Ball the golfer (although actually called John Frederick Ball). https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NNMY-P6F
See details in http://cgi.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/ Database -> Baptism -> select WKIR from parishes, Ball for surname -> click Request twice to get to page 3 -> baptisms for John Frederick date:18610330 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F737-SSS) and John date:18620202 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F737-3HP).
