Whoever wrote this "forgot" to mention that it was bought by the Jewish family to save this monumental site "for the Jewish heritage". It was then given to the French with very explicit instructions as to why and how they should keep it, for the same reason. All in order to remove it from the hands of the Sultan who had recently approved of the De-Sousi archaeological dig at the site which was done while taking artifacts and throwing ancient bones out. So no, not Israeli occupation but rather Muslim takeover for 19 years of the Jewish neighborhood (Shimon Hatzadik) since 1948 and till 1967.
