[edit]@Rosguill: since you added the {{overcoverage}} tag to this article, can you suggest which other regions you would like to see covered here? I wasn't able to find sources about this surname in any other regions besides England and Scotland. Patrick Hanks' dictionaries are pretty thorough about discussing the origins of surnames.
