"other than her eye she was quite ____"

This sentence as written by J.J. does not make sense:

She believed herself to be an alien from another planet, though other than her eye she was quite humanoid in appearance.

A cyclops is humanoid in appearance, therefore stating her eye makes her look not humanoid makes no sense. Her eye makes her look not human. -- Cyrius|&#9998 10:11, May 5, 2004 (UTC)

I was the one that changed human to humanoid in JJ's sentence. While the show initially portrayed Leela as an alien, it was later revealed that she was a mutant (see article). I think that the content about her appearance should take into account what she is, which is human. Personally, I think this entire article should be redone. --Samrolken 22:50, 6 May 2004 (UTC)
Your statement that you changed J.J.'s statement of human to humanoid is incorrect. You undid my change from humanoid to human. And you didn't address the issue of the sentence not making sense, which was the whole point. -- Cyrius|&#9998 00:53, May 7, 2004 (UTC)
Oops, sorry for the confusion. I did undo your change from humanoid to human, returning it to humanoid. The sentence indeed does not make sense, and I would suggest that the sentence is redundant, as the last sentence from the third paragraph touches upon her appearance. I still think that this entire article should be redone in a more organized manner, including sections like, "Origin", "Appearance", "History", etc. Anyway, this is an article about a 'cartoon character'. --Samrolken 19:03, 7 May 2004 (UTC)

Fry

Why are there no mentions of her strange crush/love/hate/friend relationship with Fry?

The penultimate and final paragraphs are dedicated to this. Mallocks 21:40, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

Kif

Kif was impregnated by Leela. This should be mentioned in the article.

The "See also" section: Why mention another Leela?

I thought there should be some explanation of why these links were included, but I'm not sure how it should be added to the article. It should be mentioned that Leela is also the name of a character on Doctor Who, and that Futurama creator Matt Groening also created The Simpsons. (Also, I think there were other references to Doctor Who on The Simpsons besides the one mentioned.) Leela could actually have been named after the Doctor Who character, since her surname isn't mentioned in early episodes; it could have been added later as a bit of clever wordplay. "The Other"

In the bit talking about Nibbler's mention of "the Other" it says (after mentioning the most common fan interpretation of the line) that "It is equally likely that this was merely a trick used by Nibbler to convince Fry to freeze himself."

I think "also possible" is more appropriate than "equally likely." I've only heard the "it was just a trick" theory a couple of times, and it's definitely a minority interpretation. Also, that kind of coldly cynical manipulation is characteristic of a MUCH darker universe than Futurama's - I think it gives a false impression of the tone of the show and makes Futurama appear uncharacteristically dystopic.

I think "the other" is the fact that Leela and Fry battle the giant brain in "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid." Go Futurama! Sp3000 21:36, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Move proposition

Anyone think we should move this to Turanga Leela? -- Digital Watches 15:41, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

Why are all the Futurama characters at their full names, anyway? That's a violation of WP:NAME -- the most common name in English, with the least disambiguation necessary. --Dhartung | Talk 11:04, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
I quote: Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people) starts from the idea that names in the format <First name> <Last name> are usually the least problematic as page name for an article on a single person. Although I can see why Zoidberg, Bender, and Farnsworth would need to be changed, it seems as though Turanga Leela would fit that perfectly. -- Digital Watches 15:41, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
From Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people): Fictional characters: whether an article is to be named Dame Edna Everage or Dame Edna or Edna Everage is indifferent to this particular guideline. I hate to point it out to you, but these are not people. --Dhartung | Talk 02:31, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
The way it's phrased, it seems to say "There is no guideline for fictional characters." I'm citing precedent from the other characters. I think that it should be moved. -- Digital Watches 03:32, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

It's good because it gets rid of the parentheses. I moved it. I think you should be able to move it back if there's a consensus to disagree-- not sure Ashibaka tock 01:53, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

What's the point of the external link? I don't think it adds anything of value. Joppelito 19:48, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

I agree it doesn't add anything of value, more specifically it goes again point 13 of this section in the guidelines on external links, i.e. "Sites that are only indirectly related to the article's subject", certainly I'd say a link to a computer in the shape of Leela qualifies as 'indirectly' related. For this reason I'll remove it. Mallocks 20:24, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Another love interest...

Doesn't Leela also fall in love with one of the Star Trek cast members in "Where No Fan Has Gone Before"?

Her and Kirk hit it off but I don't think she fell in love with him, more likely it's a reference to Kirk always getting the "hot alien babe" in TOS Jackacon 22:44, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

DEAF FOREVER?

Is Leela Deaf forever?Or does she get to hear again?Pendo 4 23:21, 8 February 2007 (UTC)Pendo 4

Don't know, but she seems to lose Calculon's ears at the end of The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings and can hear the end of Fry's opera Jackacon 20:39, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Destruction of Trivia

The trivia section was completely destroyed and replaced with dribble. I find it heinous to try to make this article reflect some sort of odd standard Wikipedia has for all articles. People are legitimately interested in this information, and some uninformed administrator decided it all had to go. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dkkicks (talkcontribs) 01:29, 24 February 2007 (UTC).

Motoko Kusanagi

In her trivia section it's says that her appearence is a "thinly veiled reference" to Motoko Kusanagi of Ghost in the Shell. She may be similar to her (though all I can see is the same colour hair) but we can't really call her a "thinly veiled reference" unless the creator have ever indicated that they have at least seen the show/read the manga. Cherries Jubilee 06:08, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

I agree that, while this is an interesting idea, it's probably not correct. 24.124.127.250 04:05, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Yet another explanation for the name

In the novel Project Pendulum by Robert Silverberg, one of the two main characters encounters a woman in the year 2967 while travelling through time. Her name is Hepta-Noni-Acanta-Leela-Quintu-Quintu, or simply Quintu-Leela. I'm sure there are plenty of Leelas in literature, but this one comes pretty close to the year 3000.

BTW, 'lila' is a name for the color purple in Finnish as well, probably via Scandinavian or Slavic influence.

TeknoHog 15:42, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Why someone changes all the time Leela age to 34?

Her name

Not to be too pedantic (whoops, too late), but IMHO Messaien's most famous for his organ works, so I noted that the Turangalila Symphony is his most famous orchestral work. Clarify further if you like. --tgeller 03:23, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

Actually, i think that both her first and second names can be explained by the hindu usage of the word. 'Taranga Lila sometimes spelled leela is a concept from Hinduism that explains the universe as a cosmic puppet theater or playground for the gods' - The hindu application of the word leela --David 20:52, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Matt Groegning said in an interview that he was a fan of Olivier Messiaen, so it comes from the symphony, wich is great by the way.--87.90.14.185 (talk) 16:13, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

A correction: I'm hardly fluent in Spanish, but I can tell you that lila is lilac, not purple. Purple is purpúreo, or morado, so I've taken out that reference. I would also like to challenge the idea that the exact same word can mean the exact same thing in so many disparate languages. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.167.136.139 (talk) 08:19, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

I believe the name Leela is meant to be evocative of Weena in H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine". In both, the protagonist travels forward in time to meet/bond with a female from the future. Both are from mutant branches of humanity. (The unexpected form of our descendents is a parallel cautionary tale [Leela's parents].) The character of Leela is not parallel, of course, but strongly contrasted, to point out how much the vision of the future (and the roles of females) has changed in a hundred years. I submit this for the consideration of some more confident writer who may wish to edit the article itself. Of course, this is only one of many references for Leela's character, for each character and situation is a rich pastiche of icons. Darwins boy (talk) 09:17, 23 October 2008 (UTC) darwins boy

Leela=purple

Is there any evidence that the Leela=purple pun is anything other than a co-incidence? Ashmoo 06:30, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I doubt that it is a coincidence, people usually plan a lot before they start a cartoon Go Futurama! Sp3000 21:33, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Good point. It could be "cartoonic license" like marge simpsons blue hair. Or she dyes it. but with out a source you cant add it to the article. T.Neo 18:43, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

can't be that she dyes it, since one on her parents (her mother, I think it was) also had purple hair. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.100.207.233 (talk) 01:58, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Age

Leela was born in 2975, and it's currently Dec 31, 3007, or possibly Jan 1, 3008. So I think it's safe to assume her 33rd birthday hasn't come to pass yet, making her 32. It's currently listed as 26, so I'm going to go ahead and change it. Unless someone can cite reference in the show where they say her birthday is on Jan 1, in which case there's a slight possibility she's 33. I don't remember if they ever said when her birthday was though, and I highly doubt it's Jan 1. SpokeyDokey (talk) 06:39, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Love Life section in need of serious trimming

The Love life section is way too long currently containing 1 relationships the majority of which are extremely minor and many of which are not even shown directly in the series:

  • 3.1 Sean
  • 3.2 Doug
  • 3.3 Dean Vernon
  • 3.4 Zapp Brannigan
  • 3.5 Alcazar
  • 3.6 Adlai Atkins
  • 3.7 Chaz
  • 3.8 William Shatner
  • 3.9 Philip J. Fry
  • 3.10 Lars Fillmore
  • 3.11 The Robot Devil

I would recommend trimming the list to include only Zapp, Alcazar, Adlai, Chaz, Fry and Lars. Actually, I'd recommend trimming Alcazar, Adlai and Chaz as well but I guess they could stay for now since they were significant parts of at least one episode. Opinions? Stardust8212 02:37, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

There, done. Now, Is there any complaint about me continuing this and also removing Alcazar, Adlai and Chaz? Those were each only in one episode and didn't really carry over. The section should really be more focused on things that were significant to her overall character not characters that only appear in one episode. I'll give it about two weeks to see if there's any complaints. Stardust8212 16:33, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

I don't think that they should be removed, because the section's about her love life, not the love interests that contribute to her overall character. I also think that the other interests should not have been removed (Apart from the Robot Devil, since she didn't actually have feelings towards him). It would have been better if they had been placed in an 'Other' section.(86.135.20.112 (talk) 13:52, 2 May 2008 (UTC))

Lars Fillmore- Fry's clone?

Isn't clone the wrong word? I know that the Fry who continued living in the past is referred to as a 'duplicate,' but he wasn't really a fake Fry- just an alternate, secondary Fry. If no one has any objections within the week, I'll be editing the Lars Fillmore section then. (86.135.20.112 (talk) 14:02, 2 May 2008 (UTC))

Alcazar

Given the nature of the show and the producers penchant for classic video games, I'm pretty sure that Alcazar's name has a lot more to do with the classic video game (which is, in fact, based on the castle) http://www.generation-msx.nl/msxdb/softwareinfo/374 than the castle, as the article currently states. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 169.236.30.109 (talk) 22:53, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Leela/Doctor Who

"The show's creator Matt Groening is known to be a fan of the show Doctor Who, and it is possible he named the character of Leela after the Doctor Who companion of the same name.

We need some consensus on this one; I personally have no idea but some anonymous editors are apparently quite keen on either removing the link from the page or adding it in again. Anyone know what the truth is?

For the time being I've removed it, "it is possible" not being fine encyclopaedic style. Mallocks (talk) 07:30, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

As I've said elsewhere I think the best plan is to remove any content that can't be reliably sourced. If there isn't a source discussing the connection then it shouldn't be included in this article. Stardust8212 13:18, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

This article is way too short!

I feel that Imbluevision has made this article too short and has erased too much information on the character. The purpose of wikipedia articles is to give out information, and you should not have erased most of this just to make it match other futurama articles. I am not saying that creation and impact on pop culture aren't important features, but the biography and love life should not have been erased, and if anything, the other futurama articles should have been matching this one rather than the other way round, especially if there's not going to be anything in those topics. If you are reading this Imbluevision (Sorry if I have spelt it wrong), please respond to this within a week. I also feel that further edits should be halted until this matter is resolved. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.159.222.35 (talk) 22:30, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

First of all, Immblueversion did not make those edits, please consult the page history. The trimming of the article has been done to try to bring this article in line with current policies and guidelines and to encourage people to write in a manner more befitting an encyclopedia and not a fan site. If you think editing should stop you'll have to request page protection at [[WP:RFPP], it is unlikely to stop otherwise. Stardust8212 22:52, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
Sorry about that. I meant TTN. I understand the need to improve the quality of a website, but that could have been done without deleting most of the information that was formally on here. Also, an encyclopedia tends to have information, whereas this article now only basically has sub topic titles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.159.222.35 (talkcontribs)
The best way to fix it is by adding appropriatly cited encyclopedic information in those sections. Stardust8212 20:53, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Elbow talons

I changed the term 'mutant defect' to 'mutant attribute'. It seems really, for lack of a better term, bizarre to describe such a thing a defect, it goes against the spirit of Leela's character, most of the characters on the show (Fry wouldn't care if he knew) and general humanity. Although I'm sure no malice was intended by the original author. Lots42 (talk) 10:40, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Bender's Game

I haven't read the article or seen the movie (so please don't spoil it for me) but I fail to see how the centaur transformation business is relevant to Leela. The transformation is artifical so any hair color business is either up to chance or design. Like how Cuebert's nose would have been more normal looking 'cept he got squashed.
