UNC

[edit]

I think that typing in UNC should redirect to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and have a link to the disambig page at the top. Clearly, the most searched for of the UNC topics on the disambig page is the university. Anybody have any thoughts on the matter, any approvals or objections? Wikipediarules2221 22:15, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, I think it's a bad idea. As the page says, even with the Univ of NC it doesn't have to refer to UNC-CH. A former governing national political party is at least as notable as one campus of a university. Guettarda 03:31, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure how "a former governing national political party is at least as notable" as one of the top research universities in the United States. Any other thoughts? Wikipediarules2221 18:28, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the criteria used on Wikipedia to decide what page is the primary page for a particular entry such as "UNC" the likelihood that someone typing in "UNC" is searching for a particular page. Since this is the English wikipedia, I think that should pretty much knock out all the foreign political parties and universities (at least the non-English speaking ones). So that would pretty much leave the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Northern Colorado. I don't want to sound insulting to the University of Northern Colorado people, but I think if someone is typing in "UNC" on wikipedia they're much more likely to be looking for the University of North Carolina. "UNC" can refer to either the University of North Carolina (system) or the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. To avoid confusion, the University of North Carolina (system) is rarely referred to as simply "UNC" but is usually referred to as the "UNC system." Again, the criteria used on Wikipedia to decide what page is the primary page for a particular entry such as "UNC" is the likelihood that someone typing in "UNC" is searching for a particular page. It is much more likely that someone typing in "UNC" is looking for UNC-Chapel Hill and not the UNC system, and, therefore, "UNC" should redirect to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. There is a link at the top of the UNC-Chapel Hill page that links to the UNC disambiguation page and the UNC system is listed there. Please stop changing the redirect. Rreagan007 (talk) 14:31, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If this is changed its going to have to go through WP:RM anyway, since there is already a dab at UNC (disambiguation). Also see my point the talk page of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that the trademark is that of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Since there is a pre-existing discussion at Talk:University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, please address comments there. Thanks. Hippo (talk) 14:42, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

UNC redirect

[edit]

Again, UNC refers to the system. Please see [[1]]. UNC-Chapel Hill is only a constituent university. Please can someone other than a Chapel Hill grad get involved in this discussion? 143.165.8.50 (talk) 19:12, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Go to WP:RM or WP:RFC if necessary, but there are a large number of sources on the UNC talk page, and the University of North Carolina system have no input in abbreviations, and per WP:RS are not a third-party reference so any mention there is moot. Hippo (talk) 20:29, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sources have been provided that clearly show that the individual universities in the UNC system choose their own official abbreviations, that UNC-Chapel Hill has deliberately chosen that UNC be their official abbreviation, that the UNC system has no say in what constituent universities' abbreviations are, and that UNC-Chapel Hill holds the trademark to "UNC." If you can offer any independent sources that contradict any of that it would be helpful, because simply saying that UNC refers to the system and linking to the UNC system website is not particularly convincing. Rreagan007 (talk) 21:11, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Umm, no. This should be a disambiguation page, as it was for a long time. You only redirect when one usage is overwhelmingly dominant. Clearly there is no dominant usage of UNC. It isn't like the University of North Carolina is especially well known outside of the US. Guettarda (talk) 21:20, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In the past month on English Wikipedia, "University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill" has been viewed 19777 times [2], "University of North Carolina" has been viewed 5573 times [3], "University of Northern Colorado" has been viewed 2587 times [4], "United Nations Command (Korea)" has been viewed 1160 times [5], "Universidad Nacional de Córdoba" has been viewed 803 times [6], "University of Nueva Caceres" has been viewed 351 times [7], "United National Congress" has been viewed 302 times [8], "Uniform Naming Convention" has been viewed 69 times [9], "Union Nationale Camerounaise" has been viewed 4 times [10], and "Universitas Nicolai Copernici has been viewed 0 times [11]. This means that "University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill" has been viewed almost 4 times as much as any other article on the UNC disambiguation page. I would call that overwhelmingly dominant. Rreagan007 (talk) 21:57, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
According to your stats, you want this page to redirect to a page that gets less than 2/3 of the page views. While Wikipedia usage statistics is a very poor measure of "use of the term in English" (since it obviously is highly biased towards US usage), even they don't suggest anything close to "dominant" usage. Guettarda (talk) 23:34, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just what are the Wikipedia standards for dominant use then. Because if that's just your personal opinion then I think that if a page gets 4 times as many views as any other I'd call that dominant use. Rreagan007 (talk) 20:30, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So, are we all happy now? 143.165.8.50 (talk) 19:52, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No actually I'm still not convinced. Rreagan007 (talk) 20:33, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not here to argue that UNC should redirect to UNC-CH, but it should at least be an option on the disambiguation page. It's absolutely absurd that it's not on here. I'm going to re-add it, because there's no valid reason for excluding it, at least as an option. They hold the trademark. They're most commonly referred to as UNC in practice. I'm putting it back on.
