Started in 1993?
[edit]Considering I attended the Australian University Games, hosted by Sydney University, in 1990, I'm not sure how accurate this starting date is. Peter phelps (talk) 06:02, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
- According to this, the overal "uni games" with all sports at the same venue began in 1993. Many sports have been going for much longer though. Speaking of which, this article is more or less entirely a list of past winners. I'd suggest that be moved to List of Australian University Games winners or some similar article, with this page dealing only with the festival of Uni Games, its history, participants and sports. Any thoughts?--Yeti Hunter (talk) 07:25, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
- The page [1] describes the broad event coverage of the 1992 Australian University Summer Games. In addition to the results shown, the Womens Badminton was won by The University of Melbourne; the Mens Badminton was won by UNSW (as listed in the article), adding that The University of Melbourne came fourth. There were further sports to be integrated but the process was evolutionary - the committee described in this article did not magically bring together a whole lot of totally separate sports. This is disrepectful to the comprehensive multi-sport organizing efforts that came before.Milandare (talk) 15:14, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
Cleanup and content
[edit]I'd really like to split this page into some newer articles. Sport specific articles, similar to Baseball at the Australian University Games and split games into 2008 Australian University Games etc. JRA_WestyQld2 Talk 13:46, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
- To return to this issue, yes, I would support a move to fork all individual competitions out to their respective pages (per your suggestion above). The only list of winners at this page should be the list of overall winners. --Yeti Hunter (talk) 12:02, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
A bit of history
[edit]The University Games are based on the format that was used by the "colleges" at the time, the '80's and early '90's. The tertiary institutions that were not Universities, such as Swinburne, RMIT, Chislom, Footscray etc in Victoria and their equivalent in the other states would hold two events, each over one week, each year, the Summercolls and the Wintercolls, together known as the Intercolls. As the names suggest, the sports at each were things such as tennis, cycling, athletics, cricket at the Summercolls, Footy, hockey, rugby, soccer, netball at the Wintercolls.
At the same time the Universities, Melbourne, Monash, from Victoria, and their counterparts from interstate, would have events for individual sports, as the article states, the IVs.
In the early '90's, the attendance at the Intercolls was booming, getting bigger and bigger. At the same time interest in the IV's was waning. This time period also corresponds to the Dawkins plan to turn every man and his dog into a University. With this background the organisers of the IVs approached the organisers of the Intercolls proposing a merger, the result being the Uni Games.
I don't know what they are talking about Brisbane in '93 being the first. I attended what I believe to be the first in Perth in '93 - I'll have to drag out the jumper, t-shirt and floppy hat that was the uniform for Swinburne - just did so, it reads:
A.U.S.F Summer Games Perth
Swinburne Uni
But no date, but pretty sure it was '93 as I graduated mid-year so could only attend the Summer games. Overall I attended 10 of these, the Intercolls and the Perth thingy. BlueyTheDog (talk) 16:54, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
