Unexplained changes to the Valdez article?
Someone got on and took away all of the article of Valdez except for the history article. Its like Valdez, Alaska got robbed by someone here, by taking away almost all of its article. I brought back all of the article from before. Please, do not rob Valdez, Alaska, of its full articles, leave them alone like they are, Please! Add ons are a welcome. Famous Valdez residents
In Star Trek: The Next Generation, Riker is indicated as having grown up in Alaska. In a non-canon novel, "A Rock and a Hard Place", this is further clarified as Valdez, with boyhood friends Eleanor Busch and Jackson Carter. GBC (talk) 04:44, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- A late reply, but surely you understand the distinction between a "notable resident" and a "fictional character"? Beeblebrox (talk) 19:51, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
Valdes y Basan or Valdés y Flores?
Just happened to look at this article and saw the name-attribution to Valdex y Basan - other Valdez names farther south, e.g. Valdes Island in BC, are named for Cayetano Valdés y Flores. What source says Fidalgo named this place, which was named in the same period as Valdes y Flores was in the Northwest Coast, after Valdes y Basan (who btw there's no wikipedia article on that I can see on Valdes.Skookum1 (talk) 17:24, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
Valdeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzz
I came to this page specifically to learn WHY it's pronounced with a long "e".--71.177.165.192 (talk) 05:48, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
- No doubt related to the pronounciation of the Spanish naval officer Antonio Valdés y Basán, after whom the town is named. Astronaut (talk) 23:37, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
- Where is the evidence that his name was pronounced with a long "e"? --71.189.120.175 (talk) 01:40, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
Commander Riker again
I have just removed his name yet again, this time with the interesting twist of creating a new section just for him on "notable fictitious residents." I don't have any policies to cite here, I think good old fashioned common sense is enough. This is absurd. It is a tiny, not very important detail of the background of a character from Star Trek. I like Star Trek too, and Riker is a great character, but he has nothing to do with the very real present day town of Valdez. Beeblebrox (talk) 22:32, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
I don't see what harm of including this bit of minutia is. Some other articles about places that have been the setting of a story mention that place's significance in the fictional world. Under it's own separate heading, which blatantly points out that Riker is fiction, this fact shouldn't mislead anyone. 76.229.163.141 (talk) 20:06, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- Thing is, it doesn't have any significance in the Star Trek canon/universe/whatever. There was never a time in the series or the movies that Riker actually returned to Valdez. I don't think people looking for information about Valdez are going to find this a particularly helpful or informative piece of information. That, as I see it, is the crux of this, it's not knowledge just information, which is not necessarily the same thing. Beeblebrox (talk) 20:17, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- I see you have elected to continue to edit war instead of waiting for a resolution to this discussion. That's a shame. I really think this content is better suited for the article on Riker, it's not information that users will be looking for when looking up Valdez. I'm going to submit a request for a third opinion. Beeblebrox (talk) 21:05, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- Third opinion: No, it doesn't belong here. — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 21:12, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

They feature a map called 'port valdez', situated along a large pipeline. 81.68.255.36 (talk) 22:36, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
- Since that is a completely fictional scenario, it's not really relevant to an article about a real place. A better way to add that content would be to add it to the article on the game, with a link to this article. Beeblebrox (talk) 06:35, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
- Right, it's just WP:TRIVIA at that point. — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 11:59, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Okay, let me just quote 2 examples from the media and culture section as it is now:
"On Deadly Ground (1994) filmed at Worthington Glacier, Alaska. 30 miles (48 km) outside of Valdez on Thompson Pass in the Chugach Mountains.
Fictional character William Riker, from the Star Trek: The Next Generation television and movie series, is from Valdez."
One of those examples even says fictional, but it's okay. 81.68.255.36 (talk) 00:29, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- I didn't see that the Riker thing had been put back again, I'll take that out now. The filming of a movie in the area is a real world event. Beeblebrox (talk) 00:46, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
That's fair. 81.68.255.36 (talk) 17:38, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- And the Riker thing crept back in again today. I have crafted an edit notice that will come up when users try to edit this page, maybe that will help... Beeblebrox (talk) 23:30, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Editnotice
Bit strident, that notice - it nearly discouraged me from making an incremental improvement edit. Tone it down a bit? - TB (talk) 18:25, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
- If the edit you were planning didn't involve adding information about stuff that didn't actually happen in Valdez and is merely a footnote in some fictional universe, then you missed the point and are replying to the presentation of the notice and not its actual content. If you were planning on adding such material, then it worked as intended. Which was it? Beeblebrox (talk) 18:41, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
- Setting aside the fact that I have not stopped beating my wife, you're right in your assessment - if it was unclear, let me restate; I find the presentation of the notice somewhat too aggressive and rather too unfriendly. I appreciate that reverting well-meaning but inappropriate edits is thankless, but biting the newcomers is not good either. Tell you what, I'll add Valdez, Alaska to my watchlist and assist in the former task if you'll at least consider using a normal-sized and coloured text for the editpage notice. - TB (talk) 19:51, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
- The edit notice was deliberately made to be very eye-catching and difficult to ignore as this problem has been going on for several years. The problem with more "toned down" notices is that they are often ignored by the very type of users who add the material the notice is intended to prevent. Despite all that, I have toned it down a little bit. Beeblebrox (talk) 22:18, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
- Looks far friendlier, ta - much appreciated. I quite agree that there's nothing as willfully blind as an excited young fan wishing to express his or her love for their subject. A mallet would be more useful than an edit notice in many cases. Alas, that too is frowned upon ;) - TB (talk) 06:34, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
