I know the Buckley Serenaders were mainly blackface minstrels, but do we know that they did this particular song in blackface? -- Jmabel | Talk 11:30, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I couldn't find anything that explicity said so, but it seems likely that they did. Even non-dialect minstrel songs were usually done in blackface by minstrel troupes, according to my reading. The fact that this song was part of the Buckleys' repertoire and then spread with other troupes doesn't leave much room for it to have been a strictly whiteface number, in my opinion. -- BrianSmithson 15:30, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You're most likely right. Conversely, some blackface performers would do segment of their show out of blackface, and this song seems like it would have been a candidate for that sort of thing. I'd love to find some good citations on this sort of thing; so often, all you get is one tossed-off remark. -- Jmabel | Talk 01:53, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
