Protection

[edit]

since the protection was instated that by the time the protection is lifted tomorrow, whomever was responsible has long since moved on to needlessly vandalizing other pages. I guess we shall cross that bridge when we get there. --Schaea (talk) 09:54, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The protection is no doubt in place due to Google increasing traffic (and vandalism) to this page today for Walter's 125th birthday. He got a really good Google doodle. Wikipedia would look worse if half the people coming in to learn about Gropius saw blatant vandalism. Mr. Welsh (talk) 15:51, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

German or American?

[edit]

I see the link to German architects as category, But since he was also a US citizen he was an American architect. Technically he was a US architect, though most US people still think of themselves as American. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Brosi (talkcontribs) 03:06, 20 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Technically he was a German-born architect who emigrated to England, then moved to the United States and became a citizen, continuing to work as an architect. Whether he considered himself German or American is not a simple question, as with many of his fellow emigrants. --Fixifex 17:41, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is also quite amazing that we are missing any information on his training. That's really a problem.Fixifex 17:41, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe is he was more a ehtnic Jew, like his Friend Harry Seidler, and maybe also Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. "With the help of the English architect Maxwell Fry, Gropius was able to leave Nazi Germany in 1934". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.246.218.93 (talk) 21:28, 8 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Herbert Bayer

[edit]

I'm new to this, but I noticed a typo in the article.

Typo: Herbert Bayer's name is misspelled in the article as Herbet Bayer. See below.

"It was this academy which Gropius transformed into the world famous Bauhaus, attracting a faculty which included Paul Klee, Johannes Itten, Josef Albers, Herbet Bayer, László Moholy-Nagy, Otto Bartning and Wassily Kandinsky."

google

[edit]

No need to mention it appeared as Google's logo. 96.226.112.38 (talk) 06:13, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I deleted it, then someone added it again. I am deleting it again. Stop salivating over Google, people. A search engine mentioning someone's birthday is not notable. The person is notable, not the mention of him. CGameProgrammer (talk) 19:14, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Walter Gropius - Mistake?

[edit]

Hey, I was looking at this page since I'm doing a report on Walter Gropius, and I found something odd about it. It says that Walter Gropius was born in 1883, but then he married Alma Mahler at 1879? Please look into it, thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lexilemon (talkcontribs) 11:14, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

1879 was not their wedding date, it's HER birthdate. Notice it also lists a death date. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.111.56.48 (talk) 15:22, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Birth date needs to be corrected:

[edit]

The birth date says :May 18, 999999999 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.32.48.154 (talk) 20:38, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The birth year says 1883.CSLoomis ( talk | contribs ) 20:41, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Removal and Prevention of MILHIST Tag

[edit]

The MILHIST tag has been removed because Walter Gropius doesn't meet the Notability guideline listed here. Although a notable person in real life the notability doesn't reflect in any action he took in his short military career. Please no further addition of the MILHIST tag.--MOLEY (talk) 22:09, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bauhaus Period (1919-1932)

[edit]

This section is highly misleading. Gropius stepped down from the position as director of the Bauhaus in 1928... Nowhere does it mention this. Adrianturcato (talk) 18:22, 5 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Possible sources to improve this article

[edit]

These sources on one of Gropius' daughters, Ati, could be used to improve this article:

Ati is notable enough that an article about her could be developed. — Lentower (talk) 20:55, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Early career (1908–14) Reads weird

[edit]

It's achronological, and kind of repeats itself. Like its some kind of blockbuster biographical movie that starts in medias res where the action is. Maybe this should be fixed? Just a humble art student's suggestion. 101.181.223.34 (talk) 18:15, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I wanted to have a go at it, but apparently the two bits about military service (at the beginning and at the end of the section) were added by different editors, at different times and - most importantly - from different sources. So I gave up on combining and compressing for fear of unwarranted SYNTH. It'd take a more careful and time-consuming effort than I can spare now to properly do this (read both sources and write a streamlined narrative using both). Telegram to the Grand Duke of Saxony. A myth??

[edit]

According to the recent semi-fictional German TV mini series, Bauhaus Die Neue Zeit, Walter Gropius, while in the trenches of WW1, ordered that a telegram be sent to the Grand Duke of Saxony saying that he wanted to become the director of an art school. I can't find anything on the Internet to back this up. However, I am getting a strange deja vu that I learned something very similar to this two or three decades ago from reading something somewhere but I can't remember the source. Does anyone here know anything about this? Did this really happen? 188.31.124.143 (talk) 02:45, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
