Microdot?

[edit]

I have replaced "microdot" with "microfilm image", since our Microdot article does not support the existence of the technology prior to WWII. Sharkford 20:43, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Partial Carrier pigeon merge

[edit]

The war-related material at Carrier pigeon is proposed to merge into this article (if any of it needs to be retained), with the remainder merging to Homing pigeon, to which the emptied article title would redirect, and to Pigeon post. The merge of all of those (before War pigeon was created) was first proposed (at Talk:Carrier pigeon) in September 2009 and was unopposed, but did not get performed.

Please centralize discussion, at Talk:Homing pigeon#Proposed merge 2.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  13:30, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

War pigeon

War pigeons are homing pigeons used in military service. They have long played an important role in war, often being used as military messengers. Before the advent of radio, carrier pigeons were used on the battlefield as a means for mobile forces to communicate with stationary headquarters. A metal canister containing the message was attached to the bird's leg. This photograph, in the Swiss Federal Archives, shows Swiss Armed Forces personnel preparing a pigeon for a mission during World War I. The Swiss army made extensive use of carrier pigeons, finally disbanding its pigeon section in 1996.
