Name change

[edit]

Sarah,by changing the name of this article from "Junior wives of Krishna" to "Wives of Krishna", you have changed the scope of this article completely. Most of this article is on the 16000 princesses rescued by Krishna from Narakasur and not much or anything on the Ashtabharya (Eight principal wives) of Krishna, namely, Rukmini,Satyabhama,Jambavati,Kalindi,Mitravinda, Nagnajiti, Bhadra and Lakshmana. Please have a look at the articles I have included here and decide whether you want to substantially expand the article or go back to the original title.ThanksJonathansammy (talk) 21:03, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I think the name 'Junior Wives of Krishna' is misleading. It is unclear where the term "Junior Wives" arises from - is there any scriptural basis for this? The cited English translation of the Vishnu Purana [1] says "These were captive princesses, according to the Bhágavata; Apsarasas, or celestial nymphs, according to the Káliká P.; and these upon their rescue by Krishńa became his wives." and does not comment on whether these wives were "junior" in some way. From the previous discussion "Requested move 16 July 2018", it is shown that the title is based on the use of the term Junior Wives by contemporary authors like Devdutt Patnaik and Shankar Mokashi Punekar (a great writer no doubt, but not one that speaks for the mainstream [2]) - the publication of a term by a few (two!) authors does not indicate wide consensus on the matter. (We could record these views in the article, of course). In addition, Hindu mythology is always up for interpretation and in the absence of archaeological evidence, all else is speculative intrepretation. As such, the article, in my opinion, must include this scope for interpretation by adopting a less suggestive title (with room for contrarian views within). Who decides whether the 16000 (or 16100) wives of Krishna were "junior" and in what sense?
Furthermore, several Hinduphobic tweets/ articles refer to this Wiki article to claim Krishna married minors. In essence, they are incorrectly conflating "junior" with "minor". I understand that we cannot control the narrative outside of Wiki but can we improve the title to better reflect the facts presented in the article?
I propose the following options:
  1. Change the name to "Wives of Krishna" and expand the scope of the article and make a section within the article about the Junior wives.
  2. Change the name to "Other Wives of Krishna"
  3. Change the name to "Secondary Wives of Krishna"
  4. Change the name to "The 16000 Wives of Krishna" and have a redirect from "The 16100 Wives of Krishna"

We cannot change article names due to ignorance of "Hinduphobic tweets/ articles". Also, request you to link these several (possibly academic) articles. "Junior wife" opposed to "senior wife", is an accepted academic term. [3] Subhadra is called the junior wife of Arjuna; [4] Madri of Pandu; [5] Kaikeyi of Dasharatha. I am okay in principle with "secondary wife", if references in context of Krishna are provided. Redtigerxyz Talk 14:36, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wives of KrishnaJunior wives of Krishna – Restore to original name of the article to restrict scope of this article to the junior wives (Talk:Wives_of_Krishna#Name_change). Though there is no unanimous term for these wives of Krishna that he rescued from the demon Narakasura, the article title was borrowed from usage of "junior wives" in these refs [6][7].
