When Wolter invented his X-ray telescopes, the invention was rather theoretical, because the manufacturing techniques for surfaces of the required precision (and polish) did not exist, and because high-frequency X-rays get absorbed in the earth's atmosphere. Both obstacles were overcome around 1975 (launch of the first Wolter telescope satellite), not long before Wolter's death.
