Consumption of Tide Pods
- ... that there was an internet challenge to eat Tide Pods? Source: https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/tide-pod-challenge-deaths-risk-teens-eat-detergent-videos-what-is-happening-a8156736.html

- Comment: Since this is my second nomination I believe I don't need to review an article.
Improved to Good Article status by Soulbust (talk). Nominated by Onegreatjoke (talk) at 18:36, 17 September 2022 (UTC).
- I was actually gonna nominate this today so it’s funny seeing it nom’d already. I’ll add some ALT lines in a bit, as I feel like the topic or the article lends itself to many DYK possibilities. Best wishes, Soulbust (talk) 20:23, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
- Okay so I think ALT0 should be tweaked to read as: "... that there was an internet challenge to eat Tide Pods?
- But I'd also add the following ALTs:
- ALT1: ... that Tide Pods
have beenwerecalledlikened to a forbidden fruit in Internet memes about eating them? Source: https://www.vox.com/2018/1/4/16841674/tide-pods-eating-meme-tide-pod-challenge - ALT2: ... that Tide partnered with an NFL player in an attempt to stop the consumption of their laundry detergent pods? Source: https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ftw/2018/01/12/rob-gronkowski-tells-everyone-not-to-eat-tide-pods-what-the-heck-is-going-on-people/109410444/
- ALT3: ... that after eating Tide Pods became a popular Internet meme and challenge, the American Association of Poison Control Centers reported 37 cases of laundry pod ingestion by teenagers in early 2018? Source: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2018/01/13/teens-are-daring-each-other-to-eat-tide-pods-we-dont-need-to-tell-you-thats-a-bad-idea/
- Thanks for your help. I appreciate it. Onegreatjoke (talk) 14:14, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
Approved, with the understanding that there might be further brainstorming/workshopping of hooks.Submitted to DYK on same day as GA, long enough, well sourced, neutrally written and informative (and no issues with tempting readers to do the wrong thing). No copyvio issues (everything Earwig flags up as possible problems are direct quotes, plus a direct match on WikiMD whose text most likely originated on WP). QPQ is not required. So, on to the hooks: I think ALT0 is the most problematic because it's hyping the Internet challenge, which is exactly what we don't want (plus it's a bit "so what?"). For that reason, I prefer ALT2 and ALT3. If you're keen on ALT1, I might suggest changing the verb tense from "have been" to "were" so that it's clear it's something that happened in the past (and if you're still quoting it in memes, you're so 4 years ago). If you're still up for brainstorming and workshopping more ALT hooks, how about one about the product's appearance and/or about Senator Schumer wanting to eat one (as a critique)? Soulbust is right that it still seems like there are many possibilities. Anyway congratulations on getting this to GA. Cielquiparle (talk) 10:34, 21 September 2022 (UTC)- @Onegreatjoke: @Cielquiparle: I like ALT1 the best to be honest. It adds a little bit of humor to the front page of Wikipedia which I'm a personal fan of, and I think it'd offer some real intrigue among those who stumble upon it. Perhaps we could also include an image (I included it below) to the DYK hooks to provide a visual component. ALT0, 2 and 3 are good with me too. Although I do get the concern about "so what" element of ALT0. Maybe it can be tweaked to include the consequences of that challenge, like increased reports of poisoning by the pods during the challenge's peak? Let me know what you all think. I do think an ALT about Schumer's comments can also be written up but I think because he is a prominent US politician it could kinda take the focus off of the pods? Idk maybe not, I'm just thinking out loud kinda about that.

- @Soulbust: Sorry I wasn't clear. All the hooks are approved! So we can just leave them as is, and the DYK promoter will choose the one they like the best, which may very well be ALT0 or ALT1. We don't need to brainstorm any more hooks either, unless you really want to.
- As for the image(s) used in the article: While I'm reasonably confident that the photograph of the Tide Pod which you took could be considered Fair Use at the very least, I'm not 100% sure if it actually is Commons-safe.
In the case of the other image contained within the article, Wikimedia Commons specifically says not to upload images of product packaging here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Packaging.(Did this come up during the GA review?) For this reason, I've now changed my approval of this DYK to "pending" until we can get clarification on the copyright status for both images. (I will raise this on the DYK Talk page and ping you.) If it turns out that the photograph you took is "Fair Use" but not Commons-safe, we can keep it in the article, but we can't use it on the Main Page per Wikipedia and DYK rules. Cielquiparle (talk) 05:30, 22 September 2022 (UTC)- @Cielquiparle: I'm totally okay with running the hook w/o an image. I was just trying to guage if others maybe wanted to run it with an image, but I understand the copyright might not allow for that. I think the image of the pod itself is probaly fine but the other image does include the overall packaging with a logo so I'm unsure about that one. Soulbust (talk) 05:47, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Soulbust: Per the "De minimis" page on Commons, it appears the Tide bottle and product photo is fine! https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:De_minimis <- Search for "product" on this page. So now just looking for confirmation that the close-up product shot really is Commons-safe. (We recently had an issue with a photo of the IKEA shark having to be removed from the Main Page as a derivative work, so I just wanted to be sure.) Will post to the Talk page now.
