Template-protected edit request on 30 March 2020

[edit]

Please apply this diff to allow overriding the default text "Start a new discussion thread". See /testcases. —andrybak (talk) 07:03, 30 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've tried to find any transclusions (another search), which use any of the parameters of this template, and found none. It might make more sense to use the second parameter for override: Special:Diff/948116431/948119678. —andrybak (talk) 07:25, 30 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To editor Andrybak:  done and for the sake of older Wikipedians who might just use the 2nd parameter from memory, we went with your first suggestion. P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 16:52, 2 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 9 August 2021

[edit]

Hello,

Please see the sandbox of this template for a change I have made. I replaced the information icon with a green plus icon. My rationale for doing this is that this isn't a messagebox containing information; therefore, the information icon is probably not suitable. I think the plus icon is better, but the box could also simply have no image at all – this would, however, mean that the |textstyle= parameter needs to be added, with the "padding" option. I tried this before with 0.5em and it seemed to be about the same size as one with an image. Before making the change, please let me know which option you prefer. If you have objections to both, please mention them. Thanks, DesertPipeline (talk) 12:09, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Removal from non-user talk pages

[edit]

As discussed at Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2022_January_7#Template:New_message, this template should not be used on non-user talk pages. The reason for this is that the default UI handles this better, without confusing new editors about the locations of buttons on each talk page. Additionally, this adds to the already bloated top of talk pages which causes banner blindness. Gonnym (talk) 18:40, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request

[edit]

Plrease restore the functionality removed in January, so that this can be used in WP and WT namespaces. The rationale that the tab "New discussion" is enough, is clearly not the case, since many pages on WP and WT namespaces have custom coded versions of what this template does. Therefore it would be better if it were a standard template instead of having custom code lying all over the place. The rationale for removing the functionality from article talk pages was too many banners, which is not what usually appears on WP and WT pages, instead there's a bunch of instructions and a link to press to enter a new discusssion. -- 65.92.246.142 (talk) 15:58, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The usages were removed from project pages per the TfD. I oppose the above edit request. Editors should not invent templates that the default UI already handles, and by doing so, make the experience of new editors harder. Gonnym (talk) 19:12, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not done for now: while the consensus at the TfD was unclear, "(limited discussion etc)", it is very clear that this needs further discussion as recommended at the TfD. So please garner the needed consensus before using the {{edit template-protected}} template again. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 05:39, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I came to Template:New discussion thinking that I could use it for the banners "Start a new discussion" on Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Header and Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents/Header. It would seem that in the TfD only Gonnym has expressed the view that such banners aren't helpful.
For AN, the banner has been there before February 2008, when the new header was created by User:Happy-melon instead of Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/OldHeader (used since 2005, but deleted, so can't check its history). User:Ca relatively recently worked on copyediting this header, including removing "Click here" from the "Start a new discussion" banner.
For ANI, it's a bit clearer. Direct link "leave a message" in header was there since before 2005 (by Jnc). The link got moved around and text changed, until "Click here to start a new discussion thread" was moved into a banner on 23 June 2008 by AuburnPilot with initial opposition by Rdsmith4.
Side note: both headers for AN and ANI have <includeonly>__NEWSECTIONLINK__</includeonly> for enabling the default "Add topic" button at the top.
So my question is: should we remove these banners from Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Header and Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents/Header to make users rely on the button "Add topic" near the top? (next to "View history" in Vector 2022). —andrybak (talk) 09:28, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
