The Undiamond Arm (Russian: Небриллиантовая рука, romanized: Nebrilliantovaya ruka) is a 2024 Russian comedy film directed by Mikhail Semichev and Roman Kim. It is a parody of Leonid Gaidai's classic comedy The Diamond Arm. Starring Timur Batrutdinov, Maxim Lagashkin and Alexey Vorobyov.
The film will premiere on December 31, 2024.
Plot
[edit]The action takes place in a fictional Soviet era, but in the present day. The main character, Semyon Semyonovich Gorbunkov, goes on a cruise liner trip and makes a stop in Dubai along the way. There, smugglers Gesha and Lyolik put him in a plaster cast, but not with diamonds. Instead, the plaster cast will contain attributes of modern, rich life: smartphones and hair dryers.

Critical reception
[edit]Already at the idea level, the film has attracted a lot of criticism.[1][2] As film critic David Shneiderov noted: “Of course, it’s stupid to compare Batrutdinov with Nikulin or Lagashkin with Papanov. It’s complete nonsense. But as a disposable piece of chewing gum with the motto ‘People will swallow it’, why not. ‘The Undiamond Arm’, fortunately, will not be released in cinemas”.[3] Maxim Nikulin , the son of actor Yuri Nikulin, in an interview with News.ru said that he had not seen any high-quality similar projects on the TNT TV channel: “Bad. Nothing I saw was good. Someone rightly noted: you can’t look for success where you’ve already found it”.[4][5] At the same time, the project was supported by Sarik Andreasyan, who noted that “it is necessary to adapt classical works for modern generations who need ‘understandable cinematic language”.[4]
